thats very much a matter of taste. i hate the way both pickups dimed sounds when the heights are adjusted for equal output.

FWIW, Joe Osborn used and may still use only the neck PUP On his Jazz because he thought adding the bridge PUP made it sound bad. I favor either front alone or both full up.

The Roscoe Beck Jazz has a Master Tone control with Push/Pull Mid Shaping Feature. What this does (I believe) is lower the output of the neck pickup to more closely match the bridge pickup. This may help you if you haven't tried it.

Yep, it puts a resistor in series with the pickup to lower the output.

I agree with most posters here that the likely candidate is mismatched pickup heights. Experiment with it! It's threaded technology! If you've turned the screws one way and it's made it "worse" turn the screws the other way!

I play the majority of the time on my bridge pickup, but I do use all the positions. Never had the problem you are describing after matching the output via pickup height adjustment.
I use the Dimarzio DP123 Model J humbucking set.
