Play a bunch and see what speaks to you. Probably the single best J bass I've played in that price range (and several higher) was a Flea at my local shop, but It was pretty ugly. I feel like J basses are all over the map sound wise (in ways that Ps aren't) and you just have to play a pile of them

The day I went out looking for a Jazz Bass I went to 3 different stores until I found the neck I was looking for. All were American Standard’s and they all did not feel the same.

But when you find that “one” it’s just magic.

You'd be better off actually gettin gout there and trying them for yourself. What others like my be what you dont. That's why we have choices.

For my money the MIJ Geddy Lee Jazz bass is the best Jazz bass that Fender has ever made. Used they usually go for around $700.00. I've never played a US made Geddy but I've heard good things about them and I've seen them go for around$1200.00. Good luck with your search.

I'd get a Fender MIM, and buy some single coil Fralins. Then use the rest of the money on amp, or cab, or maybe even reproductive effects! (my pedals tend to expand offspring like rebbits!)

I would get a MIJ Geddy Lee w/ blk pg, and a set of STK-2J pu's and put on a Drop D tuner...
and then pocket the extra $400.

I give you 1300 dollars and tell you to buy a jazz bass. What do you buy and why? Is it the pickups, string spacing, etc.
(In other words im thinking about buying one).

Try not to put a dollar figure on it. There are some truly excellent instruments for way less than your price point.
For example, I picked up an Indonesian G&L JB-2 tribute.
Outstanding bass at any price and can be had NEW for about $400 on MF. Excellent neck, pickups, bridge etc. Light weight and well balanced player. I'm proud to play it anywhere. It is in the league of my American Jazz Bass, seriously. Read the reviews on this bass and save yourself $900!!

I'm putting together a jazz bass right now which should come in at right about 1k... spalted body, vt concentric controls, Klein early 60's pups, maple/black block neck, and a Hipshot Kickass bridge. I'll post it when it's done.

For a $1300 budget, I would find a used USA bass. If passive, I would add a battery box and a Sadowsky preamp. But, that’s me.

I was thinking about getting one put into my g&l jb2 with NJ4s. What type of character or tonal possibilities does such a preamp add? I want a little more bite and growl out of this thing.

What do you think of those Frains compared to the nord nj4s? I'm feeling like these nords sound fantastic but are pretty subdued and not very growly.

I have a Sadowsky outboard preamp. It does wonders for a J Bass. Tone becomes, bigger, fatter, tighter, richer. Great edge available for slap tone when you want it. Big booty too. I love Precision Basses but the Sadowsky preamp fattens a Jazz Bass up enough to allow me to leave the P home.

I'm also in the market for a jazz, with similar budget. This is the first I've heard of Bacchus. What's the story with those?!

I'm pretty sure that these are from Japan. I was truly diggin' a used one at a local shop and somebody bought it while I was still trying to rationalize my way to giving it a home. VERY nice woods, great craftsmanship, and the model I looked at was loaded with goodies including an on board 3-band preamp.

As with any instrument, if you get a chance to sit down with one of these and see how it fits you, jump on it. Knowledge is power. I have a passive Franken-Jazz with a Warmoth neck, etc. that I've been playing for so long that it has become my "reference" bass. This Bacchus I sampled was a really great rig, but it felt different for me, so I didn't grab it right away. Too bad - very few used basses are that good and going for less than $800.
