Jazz Bass player needs help

Hey all. Im looking for a dark yet articulate sound for my MIM fender jazz. I usually I keep the other pickup at 100% and the other one at 75% (bridge pickup for jaco burp and neck for P-bass bite) or both at 100% for rock and pop stuff. I keep the tone at middle because at 0% its muddy or nasal and at 100%its all noisy and crackly :scowl:

The sound im after has a tight bottom and midrange, without zingyness or boominess :hiding:

If you listen to Marcus Millers 'Sun Dont Lie' at 1.15 you'll hear the bridge sound im looking for :hyper:

I want the neck pickup to sound like a P-bass played with a nice attack - something like this

So far ive been using elixirs. They feel nice, but expensive and the sound isnt exactly what im looking for. I like nickel plated strings the best. What strings would you guys recommend for me? :bassist:
