Try going the other way: keep the bridge pickup all the way up and turn the neck pickup down to somewhere around 7 or 8. Then roll the tone way down; maybe 2 or 3.
See if that doesn't give you the tone you're after.

Thanks! I like that thinking. Might need to boost the bass a tad as well, but I'm definitely going to give that a try.

Yeah, if they were not vintage (the '71 is near mint) I'd do it in a heart beat. Or drop some thick sounding pickups in for sure.

One of the nice things about the J setup is all of the controls are on a separate plate. Buy a loaded J control plate and a switch pot and wire it with a series/parallel mod, and simply take the original plate out and wire pups into the new plate.

Putting it back to stock then becomes very simple.

I took my old '62 Jazz and put some TI Jazz Rounds on it I had at the house. Struggling to get a Jazz tone I love (full an thick, not hollow--big lows and odd upper mids hollow), these seem to be working after a couple practices. After a bunch of strings and various settings, the TI Jazz Rounds seemed to be the most pleasing adjustment I've made thus far. I remember playing and thinking: "I like this!" Not, "I need to turn a knob or get these strings off when I get home." I love flats but the TIs Flats just didn't seem to do it when I tried those a while back. Cobalts were good for one practice then after that I started looking again. The Jazz Rounds are a forgotten gem for the moment, but I hope it lasts. My '71 has GHS Precision Flats and sounds pretty good, so I'm not making any changes there for the time being.

I would never consider doing anything not reversible to a 60's JB. However I would the 70's JB.
And before I invested a couple of hundred in new pickups, I would drop in an Audere Jazz bass pre which is reversible also.
I did that to my MIM 60's Jazz and I love it. Incredible tone control.

I've got a Nordstrom 2 band on a modern take on a '55 PBass and it certainly makes it go from great to greater--even before I boost or cut anything.

Funny you should say that, I just finished a 55' project that came out aces. Though I'm still consider a stack knob 2B Pre.

I love the '55. I a sucker for them. Bought one in the early 80s had it ever since. Below is the Regenerate w/the Nord pre and pickups. It's as good a sounding bass as any I have, which includes some nice ones.
