...The only reason I can think of for me to even try a Jazz is that I prefer the narrow neck to a P-bass from the quick (unplugged) play I have had of a couple. I have yet to play any through an amp yet.
...should I just save some time keep looking at other styles??
If you have not encountered a Jazz Bass-style instrument that motivates expression in your music making/bass playing, you have either short-changed yourself by not finding a good example, or the instrument is not for you. It's fine. Be well and go in peace.
But someday, please play a really good vintage-style Jazz bass through a familiar bass rig. If it still leaves you cold, move on, it's OK. Really.
