jeez

I think it's just a function of a lot of people who gain a little bit of knowledge just can't wait to browbeat someone with it, or with the fact that they know it and someone else doesn't.

If you don't like a newbie's thread or question FOR WHATEVER REASON, just skip it. Anything else is what I described above. No one is under any obligation to make your fourm browsing new and exciting for you. If you get bored, sign off. Slamming people because they didn't post something you found interesting doesn't do anything for them or for the next newbie post (except maybe run people off).

The stickies here are often unreadable and contain factual inaccuracies or out-of-date info. I usuall don't bother with them unless they come up in a search. There is some info in there, but it is a lousy way to get your question answered. Remember that next time you point someone at them: you probably did NOT help them very much.

And forums are for discussion. For those who don't want to discuss, why don't you just move the content of the stickies over to wikipedia and browse over there? I know, I know, that takes the fun out of beating up on someone.

I will say TB is a pretty-good cross-section of people, which is why I avoid most people.

There are no stupid questions, just rude people saying your question is stupid.

A guy walked up to me the other day and asked how to get to the train station. Without a moment's thought I told him to go back where he came from, find a map, study the map and get himself to the station.

Sheesh!

Great way to go through life, huh?

Try that approach in retail sales or, better yet, personal services like when you are trying to get a gig. Get back to me with your success stories.

I'm with LedBelli and DeluxeRed on this topic.

That situation is not similar to the issue here. Imagine the guy asking you for directions while standing 5ft from a big map that clearly shows where the station is.

The guy could ask you a specific question if he's not sure he got it right, or if he's heading to a location not shown on a map, and than you should help the guy out. But asking for things clearly shown on the map standing right next to him? You'd point your finger towards that map and continue on your way.

Imagine that same guy that came up to you was holding a bass case. Would you just point and walk off then? I know I wouldn't.

I apologize to anyone I may have offended.

I bite my tongue way more often than not.

Realize that when you read a post on an internet forum it's easy to misunderstand the poster's intent. I think if you look at my post history you'll find that I do try to help people most of the time.

I think you will find that even as the self proclaimed "grump" that mikeyswood is he actually does help a great number of people here on this forum. Yes at times it may be sarcastic, pretty sure I'm not telling you anything you dont know mike right :), but it does not bother me, to others I'm sure it's taken the wrong way. I know that from experience with the number of times I've pissed off my wife over the years.

Let me say that I have a great amount of respect for the OP and pretty much everybody here on this forum so this next little bit isn't targeted at anyone in particular but ...
You tell people to just ignore the threads that are repetitive but you cant ignore the sarcasm. If you want to see a change here become more engaged yourselves and set a different tone. You cant just complain about things and not do anything about it yourselves. If people think there should be a kinder friendlier luthiers corner, then make it one, dont sit back and tell people they should be nicer or they should do this or that, do it yourselves.

Lastly the software that this site is built upon has extensions that allow for things like forcing everybody that wants to view the forum read a particular thread. Something like that could be placed on this forum to ensure that all new builders read the FAQ or something similar. That should point most newbies in the right direction right off the bat.

I've seen you help countless people here and I know you answered a question or 2 from me, you're alright in my book Karl.

Everybody need to take a little off their game.

Very little new has happened since the the book was written about 60 years ago,
and bones of contention usually have to do with the interpretation, massaging, and idolization of those 60 year old ideas.
This is not rocket science, higher math, Olympic level competition or creating world peace.
What we use are dinosaur skills, cutting wood with sharp tools,
rubbing wood with abrasives and focusing hard on specific measurements
that will change anyway because wood never sits still.
Then there is the issue of aesthetics,
which is like poking at Jello.

I stopped visiting this forum because of the vitriolic and perceived entitlement of those who spew personal biases, general non-truths, and rumors against any other belief than their own.

There is good knowledge to be had on this forum,
but there are also seriously ridiculous ideas.
And there is boorish 3rd grade behavior that is stupid.

If you are on this forum,
you should be her for free exchange of ideas,
not to bully.
There should be no pecking order here.

I have never posted in the LC but read it daily. Anyone who does a search will be attest to the fact that Slater (Mikeyswood) generally replies to almost every thread. He has contributed to the stickies and usually provides an answer to even the most unnecessary of threads. Granted his sense of humor is a bit harsh but he is really a source of knowledge here.

With that said Slater has taught me to look through the wealth of information found here at the LC rather than just create new threads. Ive found that most of my initial questions were ill advised and not appropriate given the wealth of information here.

Personally thank you. I am planning a build and will use what the community has already provided as guidance.

Also. Just a thought. Getting along does not mean that you will agree or appreciate with everyone that you meet. While i try to cooperate and assist, I don't knock those who handle themselves differently . To each his own.

Since I've been clearly pointed to at the beginning of this thread as being someone who removes value from this forum I feel the need to respond to this.

While it's true that I have suggested that people use the search function or read the stickeys, I think painting me (or any other regular poster here) as someone in a group "who spew personal biases, general non-truths, and rumors against any other belief than their own" or is "vitriolic" or exhibiting "boorish 3rd grade behavior" is ridiculous and bordering on slander.

IMO it is you that needs to chill...

search!

ok sorry wrong thread.

I personally ignore threads where I know I won't be able to help in a positive way. My funniest experience with a newbie thread was where somebody asked like a really basic question, and I pointed him to the stickies or a search result or something. He replied "thanks, I was too lazy to search so I figured some loser with more time on his hands would point me in the right direction" :rollno:

It's humorous when a thread is established to complain about complaints, or lack of information and the ill informed. Not everyone is a saint, and not everyone deserves "respect". Respect is earned, but in this society it is expected along with many other things that are thought of as entitlements. Almost all of us have been told to "look it up" at one time or another. This is really not that difficult a task. Joeyl makes a good point about this type of situation, and we have had many lately getting snide about someone suggesting a poster/newb to actually take a few minutes, and do a search. We as shop owners/builders/luthiers do not owe anyone our knowledge, although most of us share quite freely here, so quit the whining and look it up. If you can't find the answer, ask. We are more likely to take a newb seriously if they actually tried first.

If I offended anyone, bummer, I am entitled to my own opinion, and took the time to form it all by myself.:bassist:

I find it pretty funny that you were singled out because I have always found your posts helpful and kind, yet I do remember the OP's first setp here, with CUP and all

While it may seem harsh to berate somebody for asking about information that is easily found, nobody wants to sift through tons of threads asking the same thing. Unless you all genuinely want to see another thread asking WHICH BASS R GOOD 4 METULZ. Everybody at some point posts an unnecessary thread, which someone else berates them about. It happened to me, and I never did it again, and I search a bit more before posting, because I learned from the experience.
