jeez

That situation is not similar to the issue here. Imagine the guy asking you for directions while standing 5ft from a big map that clearly shows where the station is.

The guy could ask you a specific question if he's not sure he got it right, or if he's heading to a location not shown on a map, and than you should help the guy out. But asking for things clearly shown on the map standing right next to him? You'd point your finger towards that map and continue on your way.

I guess you didn't notice the guy's white cane with the red tip. That makes the map pretty freakin' useless, doesn't it? As well as the advice to look at it.

Part of the "fun" of the interweb is that you don't know what's on the other end, or how inexperienced they are, or how cumbersome the language is for them. Unfortunately, too many people find their "fun" in bashing on people who are today as inexperienced as they were 5 months or 5 years ago. (Prob one of those cycle-of-luv things.)

One of the other nice things about the web? You can always disconnect.

It's one thing being unable to look at the map, another not knowing that there's a map/not caring enough to look at it. For those people, advice to look at it is enough. Once they do look, even if they don't manage and ask the most basic question, you should help. But not before they have even tried.

DeluxeRed:

I will invite you to my house and you will be AMAZED at how independent the blind are. My house is next to one of the largest employers for the blind and my community is very good as helping because they first help themselves.

I had once come home to someone walking in my back yard and once she was off of her path she was hopelessly lost. The moment she returned to the sidewalk she knew where she was and took it from there.

You are suggesting that I might be evil in that scenario since I did not walk her to her place of work. I consider myself helpful because I was able to assist a person able to help themselves.

There is no way to walk anyone through life and if there were it would be the end of civilized society.

Or being colorblind, or unable to read the language, or severely dyslexic (a disease terrible) or or or. Just because it's obvious to you doesn't make it obvious to anyone else. I just think deciding to be a jerk when I couldn't possibly know all the facts is a bad choice. Acting like a jerk by default, instead of just answering the question and going on with my life, is, IMO, really bad karma. Especially in a forum where one has to go looking for trouble by browsing, as opposed to being in public coincidently near a map. But that takes all of the fun out of judging whether someone has tried enough for one to satisfy whatever criteria one has decided to make up, and the fun of bashing them because they don't measure up. YMMV.

I think we can't cover all cases we can find to explain our views, so I will got like this :

Generally speaking, people are able to dig by themselves information (wether it's a map, roadtrip or stickies in a forum)

For those who can't locate those tools, they can be (politely) aimed at those sources.

Other than that, to the people answering over and over again the same questions when you can find the info in the stickies or with the search tool...

Then when doing a search, more threads will appear and scare newbies to read them all to find their answer and makes them ask a question that has been answered a thousand times....

Dog chasing his tail...

I don't think there's a good way to handle these things, just a little goodwill from everyone...

Edit : For the colorblind, or unable to read the language, they are part of the exceptions that is handled on a case by case basis.

forum nazis . . . wannabe cops

What I do know is this: You give a lot away about your thinking by casually throwing out the nazi word. You obviously have no clue what the word "nazi" means to many of us or the friggin' world dude.

On another on topic note always a pain in my joint when a guy hacks out a bass on the kitchen table then hangs out an "Acme Guitar Company" shingle thinking he is now a loo thee er and starts dishin' out the "advice".

I think that in most cases, people with basic and often-asked questions are fairly politely referred to the stickies and the search function. Many times the asker says that he didn't know the stickies were there, and thanks the responder for the direction.

Sometimes the redirection is just neutral in tone. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes, occasionally the response is shaded with a touch of impatience, but it's rarely if ever actually insulting.

So in my view, the premise of this thread is largely unfounded.

Its kinda like buying a new computer. Do you read that whole manual to get the tiny bit and piece? nope. Are there many different way to go about intrument contruction? ITS A FREAKEN ART FORM. many new members/builders are scared, thinking of a bass and its construction, as something inanely difficult and complex. they also are not yet aware of the search function. i know i wasnt when i started. Asking about different method, and exploring the posabilities, is how new builders develop something of there own. When i was starting making designs, they were only p-basses with funky paint jobs. factory parts, and everything. I thought if a brand name company didn't do it, it should not be attempted. I was limited to pure mimicry. I learned how and why things functioned, and saw just how creative you can be by talking to members, watching there builds and asking questions.

i am not seeing why SoM was pointed out. hes always been helpful about questions, and i always learn something useful by watching his unique spin on things in his build threads. Mikey, to the new user may seem a bit ticked at questions, but to those that are more familiar with tb, its sarcasm that is all in good fun, for the most part. he has good info, and puts up sweet tutorials. the sarcasm is ment to be taken as sarcasm.

One thing that I've learned is that sarcasm can be hard to understand through text. A lot of people know Mikey, so they know that he's being sarcastic. A lot of people don't know Mikey too, so they don't know when he's being sarcastic.

Subtle hints help people see the sarcasm. As do the smilies :D

While it may seem harsh to berate somebody for asking about information that is easily found, nobody wants to sift through tons of threads asking the same thing. Unless you all genuinely want to see another thread asking WHICH BASS R GOOD 4 METULZ...

This ^^^

And to JF, T2W, joeyl, et al, I'm glad to see that not everyone sees me the way the OP and DR do. And T2W, lemme help you roll that!

For what it's worth, I like Son of Magni. He's been very helpful to me and LOTS of others. I also like Mikeyswood, I personally think he's the most helpful, staight forward, honest, guy around and he's got a wonderful sence of humor. If you guys want to tell someone go to the stickies, you have my blessing. :D

I am on TB almost everyday. I have used the search and not had much success finding what I am looking for. I read some responses and it scares me from asking questions. I work for a company that is constantly belittling their employees so I don't want to be belittled here. Now before this thread I didn't understand the stickies and I know this will sound stupid but I didn't know where they were. So today was the first day I went to them and I can see why people get irritated. There is a wealth of info there and if it is not there, I can feel free to ask. I wish I had gone there sooner. But to be honest for me they didn't stand out (I headed straight for the bold print, so maybe bold and bigger would help).

One thing that I've learned is that sarcasm can be hard to understand through text...

Only if the person reading the text is easily offended and/or is on the defensive. Sarcasm has been a part of literature for a very long time... but of course when was the last time anyone has read Samuel Clemens with the frame of mind that the words were mocking one specific reader... that being him/her?

I am probably one of the more sarcastic SOBs around here but my words aren't mean to offend, just to mock all of us in general because none of us is perfect and knows everything although we sometimes act as though we do.
