Ability to read the stickies is an invaluable tool.

And then the thread gets shut down.

It's ALL recycled information people. Just engage and talk about his questions, instead of railing him for not reading the "Stickies"

forum nazis . . . wannabe cops

IMO, you can't want something and not even try to make an effort. It's simple and justified. RTFM is a useful answer: it says that the answer is in your reach, and that you should try consulting those sources first about any issues you might have.

But we've all had someone say this to each of us, I've always been of the opinion that the stickies are there for that exact reason, but I can also see where the same old questions over and over and over and over again does get kinda irritating. Besides, pointing them to a correct place for information, does not make them "forum nazis or wannabe cops".

I think there is also a way to say (write) things, even if the question has been brought up 500 times.

There is the "pointing a guy to a invaluable source", and then there is the "STOP asking stupid question without reading stickies first" attitude, and there's some kind of in-between...

See also this thread :

New Tber asks, then is redirected to stickies, then comes back and asks a valid question...

Edit : not pointing or blaming anyone on how their reply, just making an observation on how those threads are handled....

^^^^^Hey, the French Canadian guy is right again..... ;)

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

I also agree with this.

The problem lies with the people who go by, "Teach a man to build a fire and he stays warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he stays warm for the rest of his life."

This is supposed to read "Build a man a fire and he stays warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he stays warm for the rest of his life." I brainfarted and mistyped it.

I know that you have lazy as* everywhere... but even a lazy a** deserve to be directed to the non-lazy-assness of stickies with respect.

(Ok, for those who may wonder, I work as a customer support field technician, and 99% of my customer are lazy a**...)

Absolutely in a perfect forum world, but forums are populated by emotion expressing humans. Frustration rears it's head at petty repetiveness..yes..there are stupid questions as well as stupid answers. there's no real incentive to be tighty white sensitive as in the commercial field where client and $$ are at stake.

I think you'll find a forum's evolution predictable. Newbies ask questions, veterans answer over and over and... Within six months the newbies are now "veterans" passing out sage advice after the previous class of "veterans" have moved on from boredom and frustration.

This isn't making any sense to me. If you teach someone to build a fire today then why can't they build a fire [for] tomorrow. Why can't they just keep the fire going constantly. No, this makes zero sense.

Now ,fishing, that I can understand. :p
