Hey theaterbass29, I didn't realize the poster was a TB'r.
I'm thinking about trying to capture a 8-string Waterstone for my Zeppelin Tribute.
JPJ played an 8-string Hagstrom on a few old Zep tunes.
My newly bought '88 MIJ Jazz is fitting the bill for now though.
My Zeppelin Tribute is playing at 3rd & Lindsley on May 2nd if you're around.
Our other "bar band" plays in Nashville and Murfreesboro all the time. I just
got back from Tootsie's.

Yeah I play for Scott Collier at Tootsies when Im not out with Eric Durrance. We usually play Fri-Mon.
Maybe that's why you look familiar on your myspace. I've seen Scott Collier a couple times at Tootsie's. I don't get down to Broadway as much as I'd like.

The model was called the "Acoustic" 12 string, even though it was not acoustic. I worked for Kaman Music from 1993 to 1997 and was the Hamer (& Trace Elliot) product specialist for the western U.S.. As specialists (there were 3 of us,) we were able to order our own product inventory for our own territories. Being a bass player and believing in Hamer (they still don't get the credit they deserve...their quality is killer,) I ordered and sold a few of these to different dealers during the time, so there are some kicking around out there. I seem to remember a tasty gold top Acoustic 12 that was bought by a dealer in L.A. that was particulary cool.
The A 12's did have a big body (broad, not deep,) which did help reduce the neck dive.
Hamer would probably still make an A12 for a price. Jol Dantzig is still with Hamer (he's been around since the very beginning and is the main design guru,) so you can't go wrong. All American Hamers are truly custom shop instruments anyway, so hit them up and get a quote!

sorry to be slightly off topic, but waterstone Tom Petersson is only 32" scale now?? i know they do little runs where the have certain colors or designs available and then they change things a little bit and then do another run... but is the 34" no more?
I've honestly never played an 8 string or a 12 string, but I've always loved Ament's bass line on Rearviewmirror. Is a pick a must?
AFAIK, Waterstone only makes the 32" model now. Tom and others found it superior in terms of playability/tone to the 34" scale. I've got a TP-12 34" with the 48 mm neck and it is a bit of a beast to play compared to my Hamer Chaparral B12L. Could always email them and ask....

I don't think a pick is "necessary" when playing an 8 or 12 string. It depends on the song I guess. I've never owned one, but I'm shopping. So I've played several recently.
I felt comfortable playing with my fingers on an 8, but on the 12 it felt a little odd.
It depends. A Hamer 12 has much closer spacing than a Dean or Galveston, so it is harder to play finger style. I have a Galveston and alternate between pick and fingerstyle depending upon the song and the sound that I am going for. You can be a little more "subtle" (as subtle as 12 string can be) playing fingerstyle.
I have a hamer 12 chaparel, I have to double check the numbers on it at the hamer site to make sure if it is a korean or USA model. Ive had it for 5 years. I been playing basses since '86 and it was one of the many I wanted in my arsenal. Not really impressed with it. Tried it for several genres rock, jungle, and experimental stuff. Playable with fingers (hammer ons taps or just reg fingering) best if you use a pick ( I prefer to bloody up my bass playing with my fingers usually ). Done the split out signal high end amps and low end, use of multiple pedals and midi efx. All around a great rock bass. I have basically lost interest in it as you can recreate harmonics and chourus efx with modern efx units, though you can not recreate the awe factor (that bassists usually are the only ones to really appreciate ) although it holds tuning well, it can be a pain in the ass to work that truss and keep action good. Just replaced the strings on it too, cost a small fortune. thinking about getting rid of it and buying a upright, I already have sampled it so I have the sound wave on my other hardware. I have had problems with the pick ups and the spring mounts, so I replaced the mounts with 1 mm thick vinyl strips so it doesnt bounce them around, nice and solid, and optimum pick up height. I have big hands but dont find that it is particulary hard to form chords, though at first I got lost trying to pick/finger it.

I know this comes a long time after the original post and the question has been mostly answered. The 12 string is a version of the B12A, although Hamer just call this the 'Ament 12 String'. I bought one in NYC around 1996 and was told then it was one of only 5.
The Ament model has got 2 boomerang inlays at the 3rd and the 12th. There are other similar Hamer basses with ordinary dotted inlays, so it is the 2 boomerangs that make the Ament model readily identifiable.
As you rightly observed, you rarely see these for sale. The last one I saw for sale was about 2 or 3 years ago in California.
