Now that I have the bass that nails the tone on that record, I’m starting to work through the songs. No, not Blue Wind - as fun as that song is, it’s not a big challenge on bass. Was able to play that back in the 70s*, when I didn’t yet own a bass. Nope, I’m into Led Boots, Play With Me, Come Dancing, and Head For Backstage Pass.

I can do all those on drums, and am passable on guitar on them. Additionally I looove the EP and Clavinet parts, with Play With Me being perhaps my fave Clavinet part ever. And I can play it! So now I’m working the bass parts. Backstage Pass has an interesting whole tone run (at about 1:35) that’s duplicated on Rhodes, and while I have the bass part that immediately precedes that run I’m having difficulty with those three chords on EP. I will get it soon enough. But that intro on Backstage Pass is challenging. Not because the notes are difficult (standard blues and relative blues stuff) but to get them with that feel will take a bit of practice.

Love Goodbye PorkPie Hat also, but again that’s something I learned on bass ages ago. I’ll return to that for awhile after I nail the previously listed songs.

*Yeah I know it has subtleties, but it’s still essentially 8th note thumping.

Awesome as Led Boots is, yeah it was learned on all instruments decades ago. it’s Play With Me and Head For Backstage Pass that really have my attention. The alternating chromaticism of the main figure in Play With Me is great. And I got those chords I mentioned earlier; it was simple inversion that made them click.

There was a revival of "Hair" on Broadway several years ago, and I went.
Bascomb was in the band, and the drummer was... Bernard Purdie!!
Also, the musicians were positioned downstage and stage left, rather than in the pit, so you could see them.

I was a huge fan of this album about 27 years ago. I had a band back then that covered Come Dancing. Good times. Head for backstage pass, and obviously, good bye pork pie hat, were also big favorites of mine.

I was always sad to hear that Beck thought this album was a mistake in retrospect.

First "tough" tune I ever learned....Fender Rhodes, Moog synth (early one), bass, drums, NO guitar. Neat cover on YT with Tal on her Sadowsky and a kickin' synth outro.
