Jeff Berlin banned from TB?

Wow, not sure how i feel about this. I admit I don't know what happened between Berlin and his fellow TB'ers, but I gotta ask....how can allowances not be made? The guy, although not my bass hero, is solidly in the pantheon of bass legends. Anyhow, not knowing the facts I probably shouldn't throw in my 2 cents, but there you go.

What kind of allowances? I don't support bending the rules for anyone because of status-that's a very slippery slope and conjures scenarios of politicians and celebrities trying to get out of a traffic violation with the old "Do you know who I am?" line.

It should be the same set of rules for everyone and I think TB does a good job of maintaining that. To let Berlin slide or continue to bend the rules would have eventually hurt TB's credibility and trust as a powerful resource for bassists of all shapes and sizes.

Looking at sites like Harmony Central, it's easy to see where that can go.

All that said, Berlin did do an Op/Ed type piece in Bass Player where he admitted to being over the top and at times just plain out of line when it came to anyone that didn't share his views and he basically apologized and pledged to change his ways. I'm guessing all his sillyness finally caught up with him and it was probably starting to threaten some endorsement deals, but that's just speculation.

How come? I wasn't trying to sell anything.. Just asking advice on if I should keep a bass I built over ten years ago..

Which you can find a thread on there I believe when I finished it before having it pinstriped

I am guessing it probably devolved into "what's it worth?" or a thinly veiled disguise as a F/S thread, probably the latter.

As far as Jeff goes, a bunch of nobodies would tell a world class player and educator he is wrong and then explain their methods (which nobody was paying thousands of dollars to learn.). For whatever reason, Jeff felt the need to engage these people in the worst way. Not really the sign of a professional (or an adult.)

Now, now, let's be fair. There were a bunch of world class players that disagreed with Jeff as well, and he took the same "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude with them as well.

It takes a pretty thin hint, pretty much just have to mention you are selling it.
So it's like saying the word Bomb at an airport.. Something no one can say not even as a joke.

What I just don't understand is.. Someone who has been a long time TBer can't ask his fellow members if he should sell his last remaining bass (as they are no longer playing) or keep it due to the fact that they built it...

That is grounds for having your post deleted?

You have to at least admit that if I went into a room full of bass players and said "I am thinking of selling my bass" that it would be expected at least one of them would ask me about buying it, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Did you mention what kind of bass it was? The more details you provided the more it looked like a FS ad.

I said it was a Warmoth Pbass that was it. Now I can't not control others asking for pics (hell who doesn't like to see pictures of basses?)

But no one asked for details nor did I ask for pricing suggestions. All the replies were very friendly, kind, and advising me to keep it.

Asking that question in a general sense without mentioning the brand or model or posting pics would be fine as I told you- in fact, I initially edited that out your thread (and about the cab you wanted to sell) so that it could stay open. Then when you posted photos of the bass and mentioned the cab model you were considering selling a second time, it needed to be deleted. Yes, those are considered thinly-veiled for sale or what's it worth threads.

In short, yes.

If the mods don't put the clamp-down on "selling my bass" talk where it doesn't belong, it will spread into forums and threads where it shouldn't be, and by non-supporting members.

I've seen several conversations on TB that began with an innocent comment about buying or selling an item turn into undeniable "for sale" threads. Mods would rather nip it in the bud.

EDIT: Sorry Bryan, didn't mean to speak for you, just thought I'd throw in my .02 cents.

To answer the OP's question about Jeff Berlin. I did some research and looked at the history of JB here on Talkbass and read a lot of the posts. Jeff is very opinionated about his teaching, learning, and practicing of the bass. There were some heated arguments between him, other TBers and Moderators. It got to the point were he was banned and than made another account which is against the rules too. It's worth doing a search and reading up about what happened. If anything, it's entertaining nonetheless.

If you make allowances for him, you have to make the same allowances for me, you or any other schmuck on TB.

Just saying, a $20 a year supporting membership would have avoided all of your problems

Jeff is a brilliant musician who, like many people either brilliant or dumb or even somewhere in the middle, must have some underlying issue, be it childhood trauma, brain chemical or something else. Issues like his are particularly hard on, and noticable in, exceptional people who aren't understood, or worse yet, are provoked by less than brilliant people. His knowledge can be sought and heeded elsewhere since he is banned here. "Better balanced" people should filter out what they don't like (or, often, don't understand) about him rather than piling on him. Take all you can of his brilliance, and maybe even try to understand the handicap he has, like we understand physical handicaps. He is obviously not a sociopath, given his well-documented history of freely and patiently sharing his knowledge with others. He doesn't choose to act like "a jerk," it happens in response to provocation, direct or even indirect and in ways other "normal" people might not understand. His motivation is obviously a greater good and a better world. TB has their rules. There are still many places to find Jeff so we can still find him there in between our perusing here for the best bass for metal and such.

but we'll never know which bass Jeff thinks is the best for metal.....

i agree with you, just trying to have a little fun with the epic TB/Berlin history...
