Yeah, I have to agree that the veneer to cover the heel of the neck (since we've established it's not a truss rod cover like on an MTD) should generally match the top as closely as possible, or at least the fingerboard, but I prefer the top. If it just seems to be some random piece of wood, or nothing, showing this plain maple "interruption" in the topwood, it just looks like a big disconnect to me... especially at this price/quality level, and even more especially noting the JD's are as much about attention to minute detail as any other instrument I've seen.

This cover of the neck base has been essentially addressed, as few basses he makes besides the Basic (IIRC) no longer leave the base of the neck bare.

Just a clarification -- the truss rod is adjusted at the headstock, not at the base of the neck. This cover is also recessed, or countersunk, into the wood. Notice the ebony nut!

+1 It's been a while since I had mine. It was just a piece glued over the neck pocket or whatever, now that you guys reminded me.

I just remembered that kind of big piece on 'non matching wood' on that beautiful top and thought it was a strange construction/design decision, given the otherwise perfect attention to detail on these basses. Just a bit of a disconnect. Again, that piece on yours is matched to the top very nicely and looks great!

We were discussing the fact that the piece of wood he uses to cover the base of the neck is only loosely matched to the top piece, which again, looks a bit strange on some of these bases. It's obviously not an issue on the Mastery, since it is neckthrough, only (if I remember correctly) on the Excellency model.

Fair enough, but your comment seemed to indicate (at least to me) you were now referring to the whole line. Just in case anyone else read it that way anyway. FWIW.

Yes it's a Zebrawood top on an Etimoe body, 3 piece Maple neck with an Ebony finger board. 35" scale 28 frets. Bart pups and preamp. Balls Deluxe, and tone like you wouldn't believe. But then again you probably do believe now that you own one.. I am about to talk with Jerzy concerning a very special Excellency build. If he is willing to do it then I will be sharing the build process big time.
