I happened to stumble upon him on recordings with Jimmy Raney and his son Doug. I find that he is doing a buitiful deep lyrical & fat bass, if this is not a contradiction ...

Nothing essential on YT to be shared; but here is a 'spotify - playlist' which I am not sure that you can call up, wherever you are ...



But if so, or if you happen to know that player through other channels, I would be curious to know comments from the crowd.

Jesper is a friend, and a hero of many of us Danish bass players. He's got the uncanniest facility on the instrument, a total natural.
One top of that he's a modest guy and an electronics wiz. He makes his own amps and sells them under the name "Lundgaard Amps".
He's the no 1 guy when the top Americans jazz stars visit, and it's been this way since forever.
His first break was with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra in the the late seventies at the tender age of 18 or so. Thad heard the young Jesper in Aarhus, Denmark and invited him on tour without knowing his reading skills or lack thereof.. Jesper always tells the story of getting threatened to be kicked off the bus if he didn't learn Thad's charts.
Obviously he got them down after some serious shedding.

I must confess that I'd never heard of him, but he sounds wonderful on this cut! The sax player gets a gorgeous sound as well.

I went to Spotify, which I hadn't used before. Neat site. Lundgaard has a ton of nice music there. There are so many good players nowadays.

Sort of a zombie thread, but I just stumbled upon Jesper Lundgaard's beautiful playing today on the Thad Jones Quartet record, "Three and One". Gorgeous, long beautiful sound, light touch, great intonation, and swingin' hard! His bass lines are great, and he plays a particularly great solo on the title cut. Ed Thigpen is on drums, too, which makes the record even better.

Bringing back this old thread as I've just transcribed the bass solo and a chorus of the walking line from this tune, really beautiful playing and some of It is pretty challenging (for me anyway). I'm definitely going to search out more of his recordings, what an amazing player.

You had me on this one, I only know this from the KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES ‘58 recording. The title comes from the personnel on that recording-the Jones brothers (Thad, Hank, and Elvin) and bassist (but no relation) Ed Jones…

Exactly! I first came to know the tune from hearing the Vanguard band play it many, many times.

I first heard Jesper Lundgard on the marvelous Warne Marsh record "A Ballad Album". Beautiful playing all around on this one!

Jesper is a genius, besides his creative, melodic playing “in the vein” also being a builder of excellent bass amplifiers.
Tragically he suffered a brain hemorrhage some years ago and cannot play professionally anymore.
I visit him now and then, and he’s a sweet soul despite his current state.
