jimi hendrix

And, for fun, listen to the tracks on "Electric Ladyland" where Hendrix, himself, played bass. "Long Hot Summer Night", "Have You Ever Been to Electric Ladyland", "1983" and "Gypsy Eyes" come to mind.
According to legend, Noel Redding got fed up with Hendrix's perfectionism in the studio and would leave after a while. So Hendrix would supply the bass parts.
Hendrix's bass style was much more funky and fluid than Redding's. The mix -- or sonic atmosphere -- of "Electric Ladyland" is very spacy, murky, watery... and the bass isn't exactly in-your-face. But it's very cool to hear Jimi play it.
(Fender Jazz with flatwounds and a pick, incidentally.)
