Jimmy Carter. R.I.P.

I'm too young to remember any part of his presidency (I was born in 84) but for a lot of my childhood I basically knew him as the butt of a lot of jokes. Over the years though I came to appreciate him as a thoughtful, compassionate person who truly cared about doing good in the world, and someone who put in the work to make it a better place. I respect him a lot for that.

I remember him for peanuts. I quite like peanuts myself, and I remember as a young lad thinking how this famous man liked peanuts like I did, so we had something in common.
Since you mention peanuts, I'll note another little moment in my life from those days...

I happened to be in D.C., visiting the office of a Congressman from Georgia. During the Carter administration, baskets of genuine Georgia peanuts were offered in the offices of pretty much every member of the Georgia delegation, regardless of party affiliation.

The Congressman's secretary had kindly brought me a bottle of Coke (also a Georgia product) while I waited for him to get back from wherever he was occupied. Not thinking anything of it, I sat down in his office, took a couple of swigs from the bottle, then picked up a pack of peanuts from the basket on his desk, opened them up, and poured them into the Coke. The secretary saw this, broke into peals of laughter and said, "Well, now I know you're from Georgia!" 😄

For the uninitiated, here are the steps of how to enjoy this time-honored Southern delicacy:

- Procure bottle of Coke. (If it's in an ice-cold glass bottle, even better.)

- Procure single-serving bag of salted peanuts. (The size you get out of a vending machine; Lance, Planters, etc.)

- Open your Coke, and take a couple of good swigs to make some room in the bottle.

- Pour in peanuts. Take it easy, and go slow; Pour them in too fast, and the bottle will foam over. (They don't all have to go in at once; It's perfectly fine to add them in stages as you go.)

- Drink Coke as you normally would, and enjoy the salt- and peanut-enhanced flavor. Eat the delicious, Coke-flavored peanuts that are conveniently delivered into your mouth at the same time.

- Thank that fellow from Georgia who introduced you to this delightful treat. (An optional step, but it's just good manners, y'all.)

I have no doubt whatsoever that Mr. Carter would approve. 🥜😁

I read this a couple of years ago, very interesting

A nuclear reactor was melting down. Jimmy Carter came to the rescue.

As a 28-year-old Navy lieutenant, Carter was one of the few people on the planet authorized to go inside a damaged nuclear reactor

OMG... I'm a 47 yo Tennessean and still do that to this day! For best results, Coke in a bottle is key with this recipe!!! I work with people all over the country and world and have told them about this gem. They all think it is weird AF, but ultimately thank me later lol. Gonna pick up some planters and Coke tomorrow!!!!!! Thanks for sharing that with this community!!!
