Jimmy Carter. R.I.P.

As a native Atlantan I’ll say to the end of his days he and Rosalynn always lifted the people of Georgia. That was how he lived.

Met him and my wife worked for a transitional residence that was funded by their foundation and she met Rosalynn many times. If you’ve ever swung a hammer in your community for Habitat for Humanity that’s all anyone needs to know of his commitment to equity. He was the real deal.

Also, don’t tell. Allegedly the flowers at my wedding in 93 were stolen from the presidential library. I didn’t know until after we got back from honeymoon. But it’s a good story.

I'll just quote myself, in part, from the Rosalyn RIP thread:

I had the good fortune to meet the Carters when they came to the small town in Georgia where I lived, in support of an old friend of theirs (an author who had released a book on his memories of life growing up there). Even after having left the White House, with the requisite Secret Service detail surrounding them, they were both immensely kind and gracious to everyone who turned out, which really, was basically the entire population of the town. Mrs. Carter was especially kind to me, and struck me as being the sort of lady one hopes everybody gets to have as a grandmother.

I said it back then, but I expect Mr. Carter would much prefer to be with her than "still here." They had a love for the ages, and those of us from Georgia in particular were lucky to have them as an example as to how to live a gracious life, both in devotion to each other, and in service of humanity as a whole.

The longest lived President has passed.
I think over all he was one of the most inoffensive Presidents in history. Truly a man that wanted the best for all. Sadly the economy was a disaster at the time, the Mideast was in an uproar and Soviet Russia was flexing their muscles as well. He had a lot of issues to deal with that deep roots before he took office which undoubtedly effected his Presidentcy negatively.
