This is the off topic section. In my opinion, there has been no political talk, just respect for a good American who died after a very long life.

Sad news. I have read that as much as we admire him for his gentle side, he was actually a tough and shrewd politician -- even ruthless -- when he needed to be.

I sent him a letter. It was during negotiation of the Panama Canal Treaty, and I was writing a school report on it. I got back a signed letter (could have been robo-signed, but I was honored nonetheless) and a copy of the Congressional Record for one of the days when it was debated.

I pass a Habitat housing neighborhood a lot here in Nashville. An amazing career after leaving the White House.

Also a former USN Lieutenant (an Annapolis graduate) on nuclear submarines, I can NOT imagine him face to face with Admiral Rickover, who later would have had to salute him as President!.

Married for 77 years, I hope he's back with Roslyn right now.

Such a wonderful person that has done more than most former P's when it comes to humanitarian work. Had the pleasure to meet him once and he radiated positivity. He was in town for a speaking event at a University and came to my church the next morning to lead Sunday school for our youth. It was amazing and powerful. RIP to a great human.

I was lucky enough to see President Carter deliver a lecture when I was in my first year of college at Georgia Tech, around 2000-2001. Even then, it was rare to hear a politician (former or current) speak with such humanity and optimism. So glad I took that opportunity.

Also, as a native Georgian, I echo the sentiments of my fellow natives.

RIP, President Carter, and thank you for all the homes.

A well known Washington reported noted that Carter was the smartest president he'd met. We all can attest he was the nicest. Too few people are like him today.

He was smart enough to be chosen as one of the very first nuclear trained submarine officers in the USN, when Admiral Rickover himself was the one calling the shots. As someone who worked in the same field, but as an enlisted man, ultimately answering to guys like Lt. Carter, I can say that you don't get selected for those positions if you aren't, at the very least, very academically intelligent. You need a plethora of other traits too, but being smart is the bare minimum. You aren't smart doing that job, you get people killed, and possibly create an environmental, economic, and P.R. catastrophe.

Many U.S. presidents have been highly academically intelligent, even in recent history. But Carter stands out to me for not only being highly intelligent, but also highly ethical...at least on a relative level.

When I was a kid, my uncle, who was a conservative, told me how much he admired and respected Jimmy Carter as a man, even though he disagreed with his politics.

He said that he shared a kind of professional and intellectual bond with Carter because my uncle was a nuclear engineer in the navy and served on nuclear submarines, and Carter was in the same field before he got into politics.

My uncle respected him for his intellect, and later, for his charity and humanitarian work.
