My JO5 came in this week from a fellow TB'er(thanks Jeff!!) It came with flatwounds, and I am not a flatwounds kind of guy. I tuned it up and played it a little to get a feel for the fit/finish, fretwork, action, etc, and it was great. Plugged it in to my markbass/Epi rig and played a little. Sounded as good as I would expect the flatwounds to sound, had the single-coil hum I was expecting (only when both pickups arent evenly boosted) since it isnt shielded (thats an upcoming project), so everything checked out.

I threw the Audere in there.. took about 20 mins or so, then plugged it up, expecting much the same with maybe a little EQ goodness/variety. WOW. My jaw dropped when I started playing. The difference is amazing, even with the heretofore bleh flatwounds. I can't believe what I hear. Both pickups full (I got a 2-band vol/vol/tone audere) it sounds full and meaty. With a neck pickup bias, I get a buttery smooth P-bass like tone that I have never experienced.. with the MK1's in my 44-01 I get a fuller, but less-defined sound. This neck pickup sound is RICH. With a bridge pickup bias, I get a wonderful growling fingerstyle sound. Try as I might, I havent been able to find an unusable setting on this thing. I can't wait to see what my band-mates think about it this weekend. Will post pictures w/the Audere later today.

I have a set of Sadowsky black labels coming in today, I am almost afraid of how good they might sound. The bass sounds so good right now, heck if it isnt as good with the roundwounds, I'll stay with the flats, and that is saying a lot from me, a die-hard roundwound guy.

Great story!

I bought my DJ5 (black sparkle, rosewood fb) from Fezzey with the Audere JZ3 already installed. Just really, really great, usable tones. I can testify to the "P"-like tone from the neck pickup. Sometimes I wish I had the VVT setup, but then I would have to sacrifice some of the tones I can get with this setup that I couldn't get without the mid control.

Is it any wonder I'm itching for a JO4 and BG4?

Side thought: with all of the Laklands I see that have tried out the Audere preamp, I wonder if that will ever become an "option" for new Laklands?

Yeah the two-band Audere doesn't get enough praise. I've tried both and the two band takes the cake. Beautiful work from Dave at Audere. And by the way, for that meaty P-bass tone on a Jazz, flats are the way to go. They just dont slap well :(

My compromise was GHS Pressure Wounds. They have the nice hollow grind with enhanced mids but still have a bright snappy top.

Your bass looks fantastic. Something about a sunburst J bass!

Did you run into any issues regarding the Audere cover not fitting properly over the pots cavity? An Audere rep told me the fit may not be very good. Couldn't understand it, so I passed. Would love to have one, though. Thanks

Dropped in like cake, I have never installed an Audere before, and I had this in within 20 minutes. I had absolutely no fit problems whatsoever.
