John Mayer

I dig Mayer alright.

I like his singing better than his playing if I'm honest. I'm in the minority I know :D . And to be clear, I don't hate his playing, I just think he is on par with others doing the same thing ( Trucks and Lang ) and behind luminaries that are still laying it down like Warren Haynes. IMO personal preferences allowed for and all that jazz of course.

Chick and Pino = worth the price of the thread though.

I think he actually followed his career in the way that makes the most sense: made his mint on more accessible pop material, then when he had financial security and clout in the industry, began doing more artistically ambitious stuff. Too many artists do things backwards, IMHO. With that said, I do like some of his more poppy stuff. No Such Thing was a breath of fresh air on Top 40 radio when it came out and Why Georgia has a fantastic guitar arrangement.

He talked about that exact thing when he spoke at Berklee.
