Pretty sad that he gets buried in the mix like that, its a shame to not be able to hear such a great bassist. Say what you want about Petrucci and Portnoy, but IMO Myung plays awesome bass lines, and restrains himself when it sounds best. I just wish that DT would come to Edmonton... but its probably not gonna happen Ah well, I still got that Instrumedley video to cheer me up!

Im really close to being able to play all that on bass, the hardest thing IMO is that fast-ass scale run from A Change of Seasons... but practise makes perfect, as they say!

does JM use 3 fingers to pick with??~?? iv been listning to "a change in seasons" and at around 12:20, hes playing so fast. and iv seen the video of "a change in seasons" live, but i cant tell if hes useing 3 fingers, or just 2 with his other 2 fingers just flying around. anyone know??~? JM FOR LIFE!!~!!

3 fingers...sometimes he goes 321321321 and sometimes 32-1-32-1-32-1 like 2 fingers.

Yeah, i saw Dream theatre last year with Satriani, I went for satriani and knew nothing of Dream theatre. It was before i played bass too, too bad, i wasnt impressed by myung then though, prob cuz he kicked a soccer ball at my head..

I have the DVD of Live Scenes from New York, and I'm pretty sure he plays the solo in The Dance of Eternity with 4 fingers. They are like spider's legs flailing away at the strings!

BTW if you want to hear him better, get Falling Into Infinity. It might not be DT's best album, but he can be heard quite well on most tracks there (and he is brilliant).

The video is ok- it just has some lame acting. I think a better way to spend 30 bucks is to buy tickets to see DT live when they come back around. Good deal.

Time for a bump for John Myung!

What do you think about JM's performance on Train of Thought?

While he doesn't really do anything real flashy (not necessarily a bad thing ), he grooves like the best, has great taste - to counter JP's somewhat "unmusical" solos - and is really UP in the mix! The bass sound on ToT is amazing, and the production is really great, in that you can hear everyone in the band perfectly. This is JM's grooviest work to date, if not his flashiest.

PS Train of Thought KICKS ASS!

ToT kicks some serious ass... mostly cause JM is turned up you think it's cause of his new sig bass? or just the volume... maybe a bit of both, anyway... those pics of his bass gave me an instant hard on, one day I WILL have one!


[edit]: just saw the dance of instrumentals video.... I can't believe they had the camera on Rudass when JM was doing the solo from Metropolis pt.1... thats dispointing

I read an interview w/ John in Bass Guitar magazine, he said that the new bass was "very powerful sounding". I'll admit, it looks damn cool, but his volume's gotta be really jacked up for ToT. The production is just top notch IMO, even my teacher commented on it, and he's gonna try and figure the mix out for a demo that my band will be recording (this coming weekend! ).

I thought it used to be a little lighter on tours, in the videos the bass looked really dark grey, I liked it more when it was silver. But IMO it should be made in blue and black as well as grey, just like the Yammy RBX770 series.

Kinda sucks... his tone is weak. Especially when he tries slapping. Good playing, good sound, but it never cuts through the way it should. Same with vocals, they are never loud enough.

Just saw them in Minneapolis, MN the other night and JM wasn't even in the mix at all. Seriously, he could have walked off stage and it wouldn't have made a difference out front sound wise. I was very pissed off! Otherwise the mix was great, the guitar tone was unbelievable, drums, keys and the vocals where all great in the mix but John was not to be heard at all even when it was just him playing with the drums.
