John Taylor new Bass?

At this point I think they're casual friends...I know JT visited SD at NAMM a few years back and I think he has a few more basses now. But often players just gonna play what they enjoy too.

On the 'business side' I don't think that there would be a deal where anyone is just comped gear and there's no mention of it in actual promotion from the maker's side...I'm sure like the other name players that are endorsers...there'd be a web-bio, so flash photos and promo.

1) The backup singers did whispery vocals which were obviously close-mic'd, but those singers were dancing and not close to their mics
2) Obvious lip sync from the lead singer
3) Sound was way, way too perfect overall
(I could go on, but that's enough)

It's important to note that none of us are trying to say that Duran Duran is Milli Vanilli; that they used tracks because they are deficient in any way. To the contrary, I give DD full credit for being a highly talented band, not just a bunch of pretty boys... and I will assume that they still are today (the talented part, anyway :D).

Fact is, lip syncs are often done simply for logistical reasons. Super Bowl halftime is the most obvious example: set up and tear down have to happen WAY too quickly for everyone to be live. The usual SB solution is custom tracks recorded in advance, with no one playing live except possibly lead vox, maybe another lead instrument.

In this case, my ears and eyes tell me that it was full lip sync, lead vox included. Again, I don't have a problem with it. I assume it was done for logistics, and not insecurity.

I’ll just chime in to point out that the Dingwall Combustion is the import model. If anyone was wondering about the quality of the imports...

Funny, I’ve been all Dingwall for years, before Dr Cheese and some Duran videos got me thinking about a Cirrus.

I have Canadian and import Dingwalls and a Cirrus. All of them are excellent players. The quality of fit and finish, and the huge range of sounds on the import Dbird is superb.

The four string Dingwall Afterburner, Combustion, and Dbird has a bit over 35” on the E string, but feels more compact than the Cirrus’s 35”.

If the dad band down the street morphs into a Duran tribute, I’m ready to poach the bass spot. It’s not likely to happen, a long shot for sure.

Cool, yea I didn't think it was a derogatory statement LoL. I don't see that though.... maybe I'm missing it, but I haven't yet found any lip sync issues once I take into account the yt video/audio sync issues I always see. Maybe that's why I don't see an issue, or maybe that's why you do see an issue hahaha... I blame youtube on either side of the possibilities :)

FWIW, one of the bg singers is right on her mic for all of the whisper sections, and there's nothign there that good live audio processing doesn't do easily, speaking as the singer in my band... I'm not seeing anything that I can't attribute to 2021 processing technology.

Either way, I love this performance.... exactly what they needed to do right now for the world, to show everyone who the heck they are, and that they are to be taken seriously still, and were back in the 80s.

I totally agree with you about them- great band, lots of respect to them.

Also, I just wanted to say... John has always made me laugh when I watch him, in a good way. I love and admire him as a musician. And when he poses, which seems to come at random times when he thinks he ought to, or when he's just focused on playing, he loves what he does so so much, he always looks like he's not certain how he should be holding himself. Like, pose-wise.

Just makes me smile when I watch him - he's a very human person.

Bottom line is that I don't know for sure, my opinion is what my spider sense tells me, so we can respectfully agree to disagree.

Great comments on John... and even decades later, he's still pretty. So unfair!

totally!

yea it is incredibly unfair. I just watched a concert video of them from the 80s... the guy was like a teen dream supermodel..... and the awkwardness of how he held himself wasn't so obvious then. But in later years I've seen it more and more.... he was lucky in the gene pool for sure, but he kinda looks insecure at times, which is almost a relief. LoL

I can't remember if I was invited down to Vegas or was delivering a bass. This photo was taken just before show time. John had a private space setup backstage to warm up prior to the show. He definitely doesn't take a gig for granted after all these years. I thought that was really cool. Huge respect for the band and crew.

Ive heard other stories about Simon where he has been a jerk (including to the lead singer of Depeche Mode) and he doesnt really come off like that in interviews. I moved on from DD to Rush when I was a kid and Rush has their own "doesnt deal with fame that well" guy (just a joke! RIP NP...though he just shied away for the most part). I dont know that I would that great at being famous either, and who knows what was going on that day. I imagine people up in your business all the time gets old.

Somehow, I kinda relate the following thread, created by one of Peavey's, with the fact that John is leaving his Peavey basses, and using more and more Dingwall's (in the clip he said he used Dingwall's: the fretless, the 4, and the 5, for the entire last DD album, from start to finish):
