I always heard when Johnny Paycheck started out he was a bassist which was so cool to me. However I heard he was a trouble maker in his first band but it seems there isn't much to that legend since he seem to be pretty clean cut, pretty calm in this work. I know he probably isn't playing crazy lines but I have to give it to him - to play like that and sing, I for sure can't do! I just finally found this footage and I am shocked it is so old but I guess googling "Johnny Paycheck playing bass" isn't what most people care about... to be fair I looked up his first band he started trouble in not this one. Also I saw pics of him playing steel guitar! Got to give it to him for the bad boy guy he was, he was a talented singer and player. Also as a short dude myself I was shock to see him look so tall but I realize he is wearing Alligator boots with a good 3 inch platform - also George Jones isn't that tall either makes sense... take this job and shove it! I dunno if those stories or legends were true about other bands he play bass in but this is a cool little part of his life I think and for sure a different era of country!

I used to play the bar in Hillsboro, Ohio where Johnny Paycheck shot a patron, or at least fired his gun. He was a character.
A foot in the door kind of gig. As well, Waylon Jennings played bass for Buddy Holly on that fateful last tour, in fact he gave up his seat to Buddy on that plane, something that haunted him the rest of his life.
Funny this thread popped up I was just listening to 15 Beers, quite loudly.
What is the bass he's playing in that vid? Looks like one of those TEISCO basses.

Any younger people on this forum such as myself know him for the song It Wont be Long and I'll be Hatin you from the GTAV video game soundtrack. Rebel radio. Say what you will about video games rotting the mind or whatever but I've learned of tons of incredible music such as this because of it.

Probably one of my favs by him, I am glad GTA V didn't go with Take this job, great song but it is nice to actually make a realistic diverse feeling radio that isn't just hits. The radios are always so well done in GTA.
Willie Nelson was a bass player too. It was a welcome job for these guys when they were given a chance to fill out a band. before they were headliners.
I think Johnny was miming that bass part while singing because that band sounds like a record they are playing along to. Its just my opinion. I could be wrong. I am sure he was damn good though in a live concert.

Watch the whole series if you can. Season 2 is all about funk.
Mearl Haggard started out playing bass for Buck Owen's and Wynn Stewart. 
I worked for a FOH contractor and we did a show for Paycheck about a year before the SHTF with him shooting that guy. He was heavily into alcohol and street pharmacy and was in pretty grim shape. We set up the contracted gear, and he wanted one 15"+horn monitor on each side of his center stage mic . . . . hooked up to a Peavey CS800 ! !
He didn't show for soundcheck so his bandleader sang a few on that mic and kept telling us to turn it up. About the time I could see the kick drum lifting his cowboy hat with every beat, he said, 'yeah, THAT's good'. Good night !

This is an interesting take on how music becomes the backdrop of many of our life experiences. We 1950s-1960s cartoon watchers didn't realize until much later that 'cartoon music' was classical music. In the Hall of the Mountain King comes to mind, for example.
