I am looking forward to the whole video. Jonathon Maron is a brilliant player. I loved the Acid Jazz work he did during the Nineties.

Acid Jazz was a bit of the Funk and Fusion I grew up listening to in world where Rap had become the dominant music of the youth.

This is maybe my favorite album that Jonathon Maron (the first Maxwell album is an overall favorite.) I sure wish iTunes would carry it!

I recently learned Jonathon is doing stuff with SBL, sadly I missed the big thing last weekend.

I knew in the ‘90s that JM was great from hearing Groove Collective recordings but being in a room with him live, I quickly understood he is one of the best groove players to ever walk the earth. Talk about driving a band and “adding some bottom so the dancers just won’t hide”! At the time he had a black and a white Yamaha, one each with rounds and flats I believe.

I was particularly impressed by the way he uses the whole damn neck of the bass, all the way up to the top frets on the low strings. That sounds waaay different - so much more muscular - than “play across the neck in the lower positions and then go up the D&G strings”.

I guess my current two iTunes additions I would like to see are the albums Future Now by Pleasure and Black Octopus by Paul Jackson.

I just saw Jonathan last Friday in SF with The Blackstar Symphony - orchestral arrangements of David Bowie's last album with (most of) the musicians on the record, not sure why he was subbing for Tim Lefebvre who played on it. Was a great show, he played what looked like a Precision 5, didn't stretch out too much but nailed everything from Blackstar, as well as Heroes, Space Oddity, and Rebel Rebel. Gail Ann Dorsey (longtime Bowie bassist/singer), David Poe, and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig!) were the vocalists. It was fantastic and really made me miss Bowie!

Also I've really been getting into Jonathan's SBL lessons and his "Wide Open Lazy Eye" EP from 2021 - great songs and grooves, prominent bass but not one of those "for bassists only" releases that doesn't age very well.
