My Fender Deluxe J and Squier J are both really great basses - and I'll NOT hear about Squiers being poor quality.

They are articulate and really make me sound good and a lot better player than I really am.

However, next time I gig for all night - I'll definitely bring my P to the gun fight.

yeah, sometimes a P-bass with a pick and roundwounds is all you need to cut-trough

For the type of music i am playing now...covers, reworx, originals from rock funk country Jazz...I take 2 basses in order to cover the tones I want.
One is a Jazz style and active EMGs with B/T The other is HEAVY ash P baody w Alnico MM in the neck position and Ceramic MM in the bridge with a Duncan MM pre that has the bass centered around 20hz (cab killer knob) blend-mid-and razor treble (horn killer) and single/double coil switches and series paralell switch for the bridge. The duncan pre also has the bass boost push/pull with preset adjustment. This is my all other tone bass. After almost 40 years of playing, I know no one bass is always going to fit all styles the way YOU want. BUT it is always down to what YOU want. The above bass sounds like a science project but it looks pretty clean.
