Juan Alderete in coma after bike accident.

Very, very sad. I was wondering why I didn't see him floating around NAMM this year and now this explains it. I have photos circulating through various media outlets of him playing at Earthquaker Devices' booth in 2019, and I remember him being just as cool in person as he appeared on his videos. I sure hope he pulls through because he has been a major asset to the bass community.

Thoughts go out to him and his family.
One of the best bass players out there period. Never met him , but always seemed like a very cool dude.

His Mars Volta years are by far my favorites of his. Frances the mute blew my mind.

Hope he recovers. Every little step with traumatic brain injury is a major event!!!

After a 20+ year break, I just got back into biking. Like a dumbass, I've been riding without a helmet. This sure is a horrible reminder that I need one.

And at the very least, helmets aren't as dorky looking "brain buckets" as they were back in the day. They're sleeker now. I actually like wearing my orange helmet to the point where I've had folks in my cycling club sometimes say, "Hey, you still have your helmet on, you know."

A helmet is not a complete failsafe (the post said Alderete was wearing one), but it can mean the difference between life and death.

Wishing Juan a speedy recovery.

My doctor always tells me since I'm 62 y/o to be really careful.. my mind is young and active but my physical being is that of a 62 y/o. Slower reflexes, slower healing .. always stresses protective gear if I do any daredevil type activity.

such a nice guy when i met him on a clinic a few years back genuine and just interested in talking about gear!

massive inspiration to me as a player so i really hope he can pull through! but its a very serious injury but have everything crossed and sending all the good vibes i can to all his fam and friends!
