Jule Amps Monique Part III

I have a question concerning the people that have purchased the Monique and also use an fdeck Series 3 HPF.

Are you running:

bass --> Series 3 --> Monique

Or:

Monique out --> Series 3 --> Power amp in

I have read where people have done it both ways (both on this thread and the fdeck thread). Just wondering which is preferred.
I will be using an SKB rack and it would be nice (from a practical standpoint, I think) to go from the Monique to the power amp (if it will perform properly).


I plan to use my Monique with a Crest ProLite 2.0 (if I can get one) or a Peavey IPR.

So.... your input would be greatly appreciated.

When I did the recording I wasn't concerned about my performance just more about providing comparisons. Keep it simple. I've been playing for 30+ years, and I know there are a lot of major players on in this forum, but I'm also confident in my ability and I don't feel I need to showcase it here.

After all we are all cool bass players here, not egocentric guitar players. LOL!

here i am, hacking it up on The Lost Art Of Country Bass, exercise 5. not my style at all, but certainly simple.

Here is my ABZ 5, neck pu, tone knob full open, Monique set flat, sensitivity pulled and at 2-o'clock.

I run it bass, Monique, line out of Monique into fdeck, into power amp.

My reasoning was I want to be able to send everything to FOH and let the sound engineer roll off low end if needed. I'm basically using the fdeck to tame low end rumble on stage and for speaker efficiency. It works just fine for me this way and truly makes a difference, especially on those boomy stages.

As for the power amp, if you get the peavey IPR, I would recommend getting the 3000 and not the 1600. I had the 1600 briefly and I was clipping it, but to be fair, I also was not running it in bridge mode which would have provided me more headroom. They are cheap enough so I would get the 3000.

But if you are willing to spend a few extra bucks I would go for the crest. They make a real solid amplifier. I've been using the pro 5200, and 7200 for years for live soundand they are very reliable and not amperage hungry like the crown macrotechs were. I've also read a lot of good things here about their prolite series as well.

Well said.

I find the same and i also really love how the highs cut through so well without having to be overly "trebly" if that makes any sense.

Personally, I can play high up the neck on the D and G strings and it always just comes thru so well. Heavy attack, chords, with distorted guitars.... always right in your face. No need to dime the highs and high mids either, which is very cool.

The recordings sound really good. There are so many factors when recording, especially into a DAW which really can mask the tonality and color of your sound.You can have the best DI but have average a/d converters into your DAW and lose quite a bit.

For instance, I did my recordings merely for comparison of the different configs. It obviously wasn't the optimal way to record since I was using an iPad, but it really didn't matter to me since the constant was the interface and since I was just trying to do a comparison of the different preamps.

My honeymoon period for me is over with Monique, and I'm starting to get off the kool aid! Lol! It is absolutely a pristine preamp and DI, and i am very happy with it and will continue to gig with it, but IMO if you just need a DI, there are several others that do just as good a job; the Reddi and U5 just to name a few and at a cheaper price point.

I think what gives Monique the edge is the added eq which many DI's don't give you, but then again Monique was intended more as a preamp then DI.

We tend to really run with things here on TB (myself included) and drink the kool aid quite a bit and think what we have is the best. Maybe so, that is, the best for us, and that is really what counts in the end. I'm just saying there are many options out there that are excellent if you get a chance to try them. The main thing is to make beautiful music and enjoy your time doing it.

Thanks for posting the recordings, that Dingwall sounds great. Was it in active mode when you did the recording?

Two questions:

1) anybody found a nice case solution for a docecage? Im thinking a nice small padded bag of some sort or a relatively inexpensive well fitting hard case. Not willing to drop coin on a pelican, but something like that would be sweet. Heck I even wonder if monique wrapped a towel in the right sized plastic beach cooler would work (half kidding)

2) re: Monique > puma setup. I notice with my puma that when you plug into the fx return, the eq knobs are still in play. I'm used to an fx return bypassing eq, to where the only functional knob is master vol. so I guess all you're bypassing is the input stage, correct? But it sounds like there is still a marked difference between using the front end and fx return? Looking forward to experimenting with that, but am curious as to what you're actually bypassing by using the fx return.

Oh yeah and, Im in!! Dove cage landing sometime in August baby! can't afford it, but tired of knowing that my tone was never better than when I had Monique in the house!

1) I actually wrap my Monique in a towel and some foam cushioning into a utility bag I have. Not the optimal solution but I am extremely cautious with my gear. Studio slips makes a clamshell padded bag specifically for Monique dovecage.

2) is that true that the eq is still in play when plugging into the fx return of the Puma 900? I have to check that out. I always left the eq flat on it so I never noticed. I was just intending using the power section of the puma.

I've also plugged directly into the puma, then fx send into Monique, line out of Monique into fx return of puma. This setup worked quite well too.

Man, I'm pretty sure thats how it works IIRC. Could be wrong.

The studio slips case looks nice. When I had the bamboo monique, it fit great wrapped in a beach towel, in a milk crate. :-)
