i am able to get off because i used to work for the DA's office. nothing is better than to say, "i know so and so prosecutor....he and i used to go drinking"

Jury Duty!

I got my first letter in July and subsequently served my very first jury duty at 22. I was by far the youngest person on the jury by about 20 years. It was a very interesting experience. My case was a car accident that disabled a guy and he was suing for upwards of a million dollars. He ended up with a settlement of over $800k. I was not in favor of this, but I did see how easy people can be manipulated by the lawyers. It was almost like watching TV at times. I was honestly amazed at how readily they would lie to get the judgement on their side. Crazy system, but I sure did learn a lot! I was there for 2 weeks - luckily not any longer cuz my job only pays for that much, so it worked out well in that sense. Next time I think I'm going to try to come up with an excuse to get out of it though.
I served as a jury foreman a few years back. Never occurred to me not to do it, especially knowing that not long before I might not have had the right to do it.
I've gotten to sit for panel but didn't get called. I would have enjoyed serving.
My cousin works in the State Appelate Defenders Office and has a lot of satirical cartoons and posters on one of his office walls. The two that I always remember are.......
" The Law is like sausage. If you like it, you don't want to watch it being made"
and my favorite.....A cartoon of a lawyer at his desk, telling the client sitting opposite him.....
"So you really want to entrust your future to 12 people too dumb to get out of jury duty?"

Got home a couple of hours ago. Turns out that they didn't want me. My number got called, but I was told to "stand by". Had I been on the jury, I would have been the last person selected and $90 richer. Still, $30 later, a chance to get some thorough reading done and I was home in time to work on a tan. Not to mention that I'm still able to go to work tonight. Overall, not a bad result.

I have only been called up once, and that one time I had to serve on a jury. The case was somethin about a guy skippin out on taxi fares... We foudn a quick "not guilty".
Wow. I had forgotten this thread. Not horribly long after I made my previuos post, I got called for jury duty for the first time in years. It was early August.
I was one of the first people disqualified. How much does that suck? Well okay, not all that much, really. It was a burglary/assault case. From the stories they told, just in jury selection, it didn't look good for the defendant. But I couldn't stay around to get the juicy details, because I had treated one of the lawyers a couple of years ago when he had a heart attack.
It was kind of cool, actually. When they were asking us if we were familiar with any of the prinicpals, I held my hand up and asked if Counselor_____________ had been treated for a heart attack in one of the courtrooms downstairs.(I actually picked him up from the judges chambers. How cool is that?) He said that he had. I replied "Then I may have saved his life, once."
Apparently that is all it takes to be disqualified.
