Just a curious question. What picks do you use?

This will sound bizarre, but on both bass and guitar I use coins--a dime for the gee-tar and a quarter for the thumpy thing. In essence, I heard Brian May (my guitar hero) did it, then I tried it once...then I never went back! And for the record, I use a pick almost exclusively on bass.

I was also influenced by Mr. May and got my hands on some British sixpence for guitar. It's not too difficult to get the hang of, and that attack, oh my.

Dunlop nylon 1mm. Black

This isn't what I used to use. I had these Scotty picks that a roadie bought for me at a swap meet. Loved 'em! He bought so many that I didn't have to buy a guitar pick for twenty years! When I finally ran down to my last five in each color (width) I tried to buy more and found that nobody knows where to get them. They don't exist any more. Agh!

So I went on a guitar pick hunt and wound up with two preferred picks: The Tortex orange, which are easy for me to see, but too smooth so they slip out of my fingers on hot stages and the Dunlop blacks nylons. The Dunlop blacks feel great, but I need five per gig cuz if I drop one, I'll never see it again.

In the studio, I still use those Scotties, though. I bring them home afterward and put them in a box so I don't lose them.:p

Try V-Picks - - thats what a lot of Nashville musicians use. They're made of a hand buffed plexiglass material. The edge produces a bŕight, yet solid tone with a big low end transient. They make them in quite a few shapes and thicknesses. My favorite is The Mummy which has incredible grip. V-Picks are fantastic

I can't believe here on TB where so many people think that the only basses are Fender J and P basses that so few use the large triangular Fender picks. I love them in both medium and heavy. (Tend to use medium on guitars and heavy on bass but it can vary) Gack! I HATE those tiny teardrop shaped guitar picks for guitars and they are even worse on bass! The only problem is that while I usually play resonator guitars where a large stiff pick activates the tone, I do have to be careful on standard electric guitars about playing too hard with the Fender picks and creating a mess.

That is my standard pick (I really don't use picks that much on bass) but I also have a large collection of standard teardrop guitar picks in all manner of material like wood, felt, metal, etc, that are really just for special purpose sounds. I also play my 4 string banjo (not fingerpicking) with standard guitar picks. Usually one of the Dunlop things like people seem to like here.
