Double Bass Just a little more level..??

Steve Carr, is your problem that you can't hear yourself or is the problem that you can't be heard out in the club? Something I tried with the original down firing cabs was to put it on a chair/table/platform that could accomodate it's diameter and that worked really good for me hearing myself.
