The place I buy most of my gear lets me return it for a full refund within two weeks, no questions asked, as long as it's in original condition. They'll even give you your trade-in back if they still have it. It was a good move on their part, because I took them up on the deal at one point and they were so cool about it that I now prefer to shop there. It works out because it takes me a while to figure out if I'm really going to like an instrument. I might like it for a half hour in the store, but what about through my amp, in my house, at my practice space, with my band, with the strings I like and set up how I want it? Most of the time it's good, but some of the time it doesn't work out like I'd hoped.

It allows you to test gear in real life situation.

For PA, the practice is that you can have the guys come to the show and set it up for you. If you don't keep it, you will then only pay a rent.

It does to a small extent. It does not mean it is a great or workable practice for many businesses or situations. We speak a different language here too.:D Edit-add. The OP is in Canada, he may speak the same language.;)

If you are a good customer, why wouldn't a retailer let you borrow a bass?

I do this fairly often with Long & McQuade. They will lend me basically anything I want for the weekend or a couple of days. Basses, amps, effects, whatever. They know where I live and they have no reason not to trust me. I once borrowed 3 new Gibson Les Paul Goldtop guitars to compare at a rehersal. I bought one and returned 2.

Not that uncommon I would imagine.
