Double Bass Just acquired Rane AP-13

Just got an ap-13. Haven't had too much time to play with it but I think the low end cut is the answer to my prayers. Also, I fabricated a y cable but can't get a condenser mic to work with it. Only a sm58. Anyone have any advise? Got a swing dance gig to play tomorrow. This should be fun.

IIRC, I think the AP-13's stereo input is meant to be used for the mic'd and piezo signal of an instrument with an on-board preamp. I don't believe the input impedance is appropriate for a microphone without a pre-amp.

I was a long time user of the SP-13, which was an Ap-13 modded for use with a Chapman Stick, so I'm vaguely familiar with the unit. Rane has a thorough manual that you should read if you haven't already.

read it, and from what I understand, a special Y cable is needed to properly utilize it's capabilities. Works fine with a sm58 but not with a condenser (at least none that I tried). The list of mics that are recommended is old (the unit is discontinued). Just looking for some real world experience from players that have and have had success with a particular mic.

Condenser mics require phantom power.

Yes, you need phantom for for the condensors. as I recall, the Rane doesn't have phantom power on board. In that case, you will need another piece of gear if you want to use a condensor with the Rane.

Somewhere around here Sam Sherry and Chris Fitz posted photos of a great way to mount a Shure mic twixt the bridge feet with rubber bands. Maybe someone can come up with a link to those threads.

It's got phantom, just not 48v, 6 and 9? Does that sound right? I also have a external phantom power supply that I can use if I have to, but if I don't......

It has switchable phantom power, +15v, +6, or off.

but i use it for two piezos

IME a low cut is the answer only when one does not have a band or two of parametric EQ. (Use a Parametric to cut off the mangled finger instead of using Low cut to cut off the entire hand.)

Hi,

I used one of these Rane AP-13s for about three years. I used it with a Bassmax pickup and a Crown GLM-200 mic. I made custom jack on my bass so that a stereo 1/4 in cable (tip, ring, sleeve) would plug into the Rane.

I liked the muting features on the Rane, and the fact that it has two XLR outputs (one for the pickup and one for the mic). I would have the monitor engineer send just the pickup to our wedges and the FOH engineer could use both the pickup and the mic. The low cut and the phase switch were really nice features on the Rane.

I didn't find the EQ all that impressive. I prefer the flexibility of my current rig's parametric EQ. The separate power supply on the Rane was also a little weird.
