Just caught Dream Theater in concert...

Just saw Dream Theater/Queensryche in concert. About my tenth time catching Queensryche but first time seeing D.T.
All I can say is WOW :eek:
John Myung is amazing! I had always heard he had some great chops and I've even listened to a few D.T. tunes. Out of Lord know's how many gig's/shows I have seen these gentlemen in D.T. have got to be one of the most talented and musically talented players I have seen. The tempo changes, chord structures, and overall tightness of the group was amazing. I watched John the majority of the time (go figure) and he just pretty much hung out in one little area doing his thing. His hands were super freaky fast! He was all over the board on what looked like 2 or 3 different Ibanez 6 string basses.
I am just in awe of the group you guys...rarely does a group really impress me but these guys had it going on. Portnoy (Drummer) had quite possibly the largest drum kit I have ever seen....and it looked like he actually used it all which was refreshing to be using it and not just have it for show. Queensryche did their usual great job of course but after both bands had played everyone took the stage and they had a massive jam playing "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who. It was a great show.:D

Hey Razor, I have tickets to the July 24 show! I am pumped about this, I have never seen them live.

Anywhoo, could you give me an idea of what their set was like (that is if you remember)?

I have a pic attached of John on the bass he probably used at the show you saw... it is his new prototype sig model.

Mr John Bonham used 4 drums,and he was one of the best.any questions ? i am no fan of over extravegant drum sets,6 & 8 string basses ETC.there is only so much you can use at one time.and while only a smal portions of the users of those modified basses and gigantic drum sets can actually make use of their given instruments,most are what i like to call "look at me musicians". This is my opinion,if you are a person who co-signs the use of,or is a user of, it is not directed at you.it is towards the "posers".and I cant say i like what Dream Theater does,my roomie loves them and i dont see why.i cant get into a bunch of music schooled,technically superior,theory profficient,and perfectely trained musicians that got together and made the "perfect" band.it takes more than that to be a great band.look at Sabbath,they were a bunch of everyday "Joes" who came together to form a band,all were fair at their given instrument(though some became great masters after some time)but had the HEART to write good tunes. It takes more than the best music schools or teachers to make a person a good musician,yes good technique will assist you as well as a good teacher will point you in your own direction,not make you a great player.all the guys from DREAM THEATER are tops in their given fields,but together they dont have any music even close to their musical abilities.its like last years L.A Raiders,they had all top notch players brought in to win a superbowl title,individually all the players were great,but as a team they were'nt the best. see what i mean ? just because you take 4 of the best musicians and form a band,does'nt mean you'll get the beatles,WHO,zeppelin ETC.:D

Lies. Listen to the solos in Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears, Another Day, or When the Water Breaks (Liquid Tension Experiment, not DT). Those have raw talent and emotion.

Ok well, does anyone know of dream theater's set? Anyone?

Instrumental medley - this thing was THE SICKEST thing I have heard in my life - it was a medley of ALL their instumentals - DOE, Erotomania, YTSEJAM, LTE including when the water breaks, etc, etc... Just ****ing amazing!!!

Iloved him when he did stuff with Zappa,like Overnite Sensation was an awesome album.i was still drumming at the time and always enjoyed Camirillo Brillo,excellant time sigs.and all those songs by D.Theater,sorry to say most are un-heard of,and the few i did was listening to a whole band of "LOOK AT ME" musicians.maybe if they were in different bands their stuff would work better,but together they dont cut it.Remember the band Damn Yankee's ? all stars with their own band,all together in one=RUBBISH.:D but its all about your opinion,if you love them then nothing i say will change that,just make sure you like them for the rif=ght reasons. TRUE STORY,a friend of mine would always claim to love those bands that nobody else liked,then when they got famous or had a hit,he would say stuff to the effect of "i hate them,the sold out".that was'nt the case,he liked them because it was'nt hip or cool to like them,but when it became cool to like them,well he did'nt, because they were no longer UN-LIKED:confused: understand ?

I was visiting in Dallas last week with my son and we both saw that concert with great seats in section 204 dead center. Nextstage is a comfortable venue for a concert.

That was my first time to see DT. How do you rate their performance compared to the other times you have seen them. I didn't see much room for improvement myself but I don't really know.

One thing I noticed and was disappointed in was Myung's bass mix. You are right, he was all over that bass neck, fast fingers etc. but for the life of me I couldn't hear him. Is it my imagination or is he mixed way down in the mix. Is this normal for them. Anyway the Dallas set is on my short list of greatest concerts/performances I have seen including Yes, Emerson Lake Palmer, Steve Morse & Dregs, Allman Bros.

Hehe...you guys were right next to me! I was in 203 down at the rail. That was actually my first time seeing DT live.
Nextstage is an awesome venue that is now seeing loads more business due to the untimely closure of the BroncoBowl which took events like this. Since BroncoBowl shut it's doors a few months back almost all of those capacity-type shows have been routed to Nextstage.
I did notice that Myung's rig was a little lean in the mix, I was listening to key parts of certain songs when it's pretty much just him and Portnoy playing (couple of bars in Peruvian Skies) and I heard him pretty well. I think a huge reason his sound is not as distinct as we bass players are used to hearing is because of the keyboards being there. Keyboards were really good, but IMHO they were a bit more overpowering than normal.:bassist:

according to your profile, you would've been 2 years old when overnite sensation came out. :confused:.

oh, and terry bozzio didn't play on that one anyway, that was ralph humphreys.

there doesn't have to be a _right_ reason to like anybody. that's a pretty arrogant statement to make, don't you think? who are you to judge other people's motives?
