ive got an old video of mike mainieri's band from 1981 playing at the seventh ave south. i prefer it to any of the steps albums. omar hakim absolutely kills on it. its most of the material from mike's wanderlust album with eddie gomez,warren bernhardt,omar, and bob mintzer, instead of brecker,erskine,and marcus miller who are on the album. great stuff :bassist:

I have a Live At Seventh Ave. South cd. Pretty cool...still, I prefer Smoking In The Pit & the domestic debut(with "Pools").
Very Step-ish & ripping is Corea's Three Quartets(Corea with Brecker, Gomez, & Gadd...hard not to sound like Steps). ;)
Don Grolnick has a couple albums on the Blue Note label. Very cool, too.

pools is amazing, the second track is great, but then it kind of wanders and loses focus to me. still absolutely essential though. smoking in the pit hasnt done much for me though for some reason. i know its a pretty heralded recording, and yet it doesnt grab me like the first us release. i acutally just ordered the cd version to replace my vinyl so im curious to see how the alternate takes sound.

i love three quartets but i havent heard the don grolnick albums. ill have to check them out.

Oh, I whole heartedly agree with that!

I saw Will Kennedy w/The Yellowjackets at The Westbury Music Fair in NY and Will was in the midst of one of his 'trance/atmospheric' grooves when he broke a stick and without missing a beat, he threw the broken stick into the crowd and grabbed another and continued playing like nothing happened! Monster player!

First time I saw the 'Jackets was at Blues Alley in DC. Went mainly to see Jimmy, ended up sitting 5-6 feet away from Will. Seeing AND hearing him was too much.

I'm sure that's how he learned to play that way when he was young.
Keith Horne plays in the same manner.

I once played with a guitarist who played 'upside-down'. Watching him play a basic "C"-chord & then hearing what was coming outta his amp made life difficult.

Pete Cosey in his electric/outside Miles' days would sometimes re-string his guitar in random order...his runs/solos definitely took off on a different path. From what I've read, guitarists in the audience would leave the show scratching their heads.

Greg Osby & Adam Rogers(both outta the M-Base skool) round out the 4-tet.

When I started playing bass I took over from a bass player who was left handed. The band owned the bass and it was a left handed Beatle bass copy (I'm right handed). I played like that for my first couple of years then switched to a righty bass with very little difficulty... it was probably easier because of the few people I actually saw play bass most were right handed.
