Just discovered Jimmy Haslip

If you can find some Flim & The BB's cd's, their style was similar/parallel to The Yellowjackets. Vital Information is another eclectic band with a similar but more fusiony style. The David Blamires Group, Turning Point, Metro (my favorite band), anything by George Duke, Chuck Loebs earlier cd's, Fourplay (hit and miss) are all non radio conforming artists who have put out some excellent music. some of these cd's will be hard to find but if you search hard enough, something will come up.

If you desire some easier listening not so deep music, I can recommend some Spyro Gyra, Rippingtons, Dotsero, T-Square, Casiopea, Mezzoforte, Incognito (yeah they did a couple of instrumental cd's), Urban Knights, Pieces Of A Dream, Special EFX, Acoustic Alchemy, Kombo & Shakatak.

The reason why Flim & The BB'S sounded similar to the Yellowjackets was proably due to the fact that Jimmie Johnson and Bruce Hornsby would everfy now & then hook up with the YellowJackets and vise versa for Russell Ferante & Jimmy Haslip for Flim & The BB'S mind you this was in the real early days of the YellowJackets when they had Robben Ford(who I still miss to this day"with the YellowJackets)on guitar and Rickey Lawson on Drums

you know Brad I saw them on BET'S studio jams and the first thing that really sunk in was that this is somewhat a different sounding Yellojackest and what I mean was that you knew Will wasn't there,I mean Mario was tight"(he also real young)but it just had a different vibe.Now when they were here in the Tampa Bay area 3 years ago they had a drummer from Miami who was subing for Mario at the time who was a real monster his name was James something :confused: but I gotta tellya the Yellowjackets was grooving there ass off with this guy moreso than what I've seen them do with Mario,and I've seen them a few times since then.

I totally agree with you. The difference between a Ricky Lawson-Yellowjackets & a Will Kennedy-Yellowjackets is astounding...they went from a backbeat Funk/Fusion band to something with a lot more rhythmic variety.
The last time I saw Kennedy with them he just totally whipped ass. He set up to the far right of the stage...sideways(he was facing the other 3 guys). Devastating performance.

IIRC, Peter Erskine was the first post-Kennedy cans meister...he didn't last.
Terri Lynn Carrington stopped by for a cup of coffee, too; personally, I thought she was a great fit.

When I first heard about Will leaving, I went to the YJ website. By that time they had Erskine in as a replacement. The YJ fans who posted on that board went ballistic and really slammed Peter, I guess because they really missed Will and took it out on him.

Don't get me wrong, Marcus can definitely play. For me though, hearing Will for the first time, in context, was like a lightbulb going off. I'm seriously into drummers and Will, with the YJs, IMO was something very special. Not many drummers actually surprise me. He did.

I bought a copy of Yellowjackets' "Four Corners" quite a few years back, not knowing anything about them.

I absolutely LOVED it. Especially the sax playing...incredible velvet tones!

Then I read an article sometime later in Bass Player mag about Haslip and learned that he played upside-down! Whoa! :eek: Talk about unconventional.

Thanks for reminding me of Haslip. Now I have to go out and get some more Yellowjackets CD's :)

I think the way Will sets up makes perfect sense. Makes more sense than spending most of your time looking at most performers back;)

Haslip was awesome and seems like a really funny guy. I actually caught a clinic with him earlier in the day for local high schoolers. Haslip announced that it's time for the kids to go back to school and said "Uh...It's time for you guys to go....we're not sure where you're going....but we hope it's somewhere really nice...."

I played a gig right after the YJ show -- across the street from Parkersburg's only decent hotel, where they were probably staying. We do a fair amount of Jaco material and I was so worried Haslip or Bob Mintzer we're gonna walk in! They didn't, thank God!

I actually thought Haslip's live tone was not so good, but it may have been the room. I think it was a tough room for bass...he played great (obviously) but his sound was pretty boomy, dark and without much note clarity.

PS I thought Marcus Baylor kicked A#@! Never caught Kennedy live though. Baylor was very tasty and nailed everything.
