Cover band rehearsals come with a few of my rules to keep them fun and productive.
1. If you want to play my instrument, here it is. Leave me alone.
2. We do not listen to music, you can do that on your own time and its a slap in the face to the team mates that took their own time to listen to it.
3. No music lessons. Its a slap in the face of those that took the time to learn their own parts.
4. We need to play each song one time. That's plenty to show me what needs to be worked on at home.
5. As soon as we recognize a disagreement we drop it and move on.
6. Each guy in turn picks a song, then we play/butcher it (no questions asked). Thats at rehearsal. At a gig we play what the audience wants.
If you adhere to my rules 95% will just "fall" together. You will build a song list quickly. Total respect for your team mates. You will find that 5% that needs attention after a few rehearsals. Most bands focus on the 95% and get impatient thinking we need to listen, lessons, repetitions etc.
In our instant gratification society its hard to not focus on little issues and spend tons of time on them (like repeating a song til we get it) or (arguing how a song goes) or (or sitting thru lessons). Those that don't have the patience (cuz I "have to" show him how to play) can not do this.
Bottom line here is "a band only goes as fast as the slowest team mate". Picking on that team mate will only result in getting another slowest team mate.
