That's a heartwarming story, MAISKESO....

I've often wished that I could reacquire the first custom Hamer 12-string (a cherry transparent B12S) that I sold back in 1995. Glad that you are happily reunited with your bass! How does it sound?

Congrats on getting the bass back and what a great story. Awesome pics of "Then and Now". It really shows that Talkbass is a great community with some very special members. To all of you that is involved, here's a "Cheers to you"! :D

That sounds like a great idea fenderhutz. It would be nice to see something like that put in place. There is probably a bunch of members who would like to contribute to that. I'm not sure of the details or how it could be sorted out but it's a good idea.

Glad this all worked out but to clarify to you your thinking that it has nothing to do with you: while you did nothing wrong, the truth is by the law you'd be the one left holding the bag. I was in the exact same situation before. I bought a stingray from a pawn shop, was given a bogus back story on how the bass came from a regular custom from the shop owner, and I even watched the bass for 3 months before I bought it.

Turned out it was stolen. I discovered this because I brought it to my guitar guy for a set up and he recognized the bass. He called the original owner, the owner called the police. Why did it slip through the 30 day hold pawn shop rule? Because the police entered the serial number into the system wrong. Bottom line was it was a stolen bass, it got returned to the owner, and because the pawn shop followed the proper procedure they were not at fault and not obligated to return my money. As for the cop's mistake with the serial number, their response was "mistakes happen. Tough luck". So I was out the bass and the money. The law isn't always morally right. Someone had to pay the price and it ended up being me.

Also, there's no statute on stolen property, only a statute on prosecution for theft. It may be past three years, but the original owner's record of ownership and police report on it's theft doesn't expire. You'd still be out the bass if it was pursued. Luckily you found a guy who understood and didn't leave you swinging in the wind.
