BTW one of the other nautical examples shown on dictionary.com - "payed off" as a course change - I've only seen in print spelled paid, as in "he quickly put the tiller down and paid her off to leeward"

But then again, wot would teh loosers on on a dictionary cite know about sailing ships anyway?

meh, the next generations will barely be able to spell their own names.

Teachers I know are already noticing a nosedive in spelling due to text-type.

The one that urks me the most, is people using your, when they should be using you're.

My son who is in 4th grade... is going thru the

your
you're
their
there
they're... etc

it gets teached in schools ... in a world where shorthand rules ... it just comes down to pure laziness turned into habit ... thus the endless spiral to nothingness and stuff.

(yeah i tried to be witty ... i don't think it worked)

Most of the time I'm posting while I'm doing other things, and I stop mid-sentence only to return 30 seconds later to finish it up. I constantly use "to" instead of "too", "of" instead of "off", "their" instead of "there", and on down the list. There's a study that I read somewhere about people who do this. They had a name for it. Can't recall what it was, but the study was very affirming in the notion that it wasn't a lack of education or intelligence when folks did it. I was very relieved because I can spot those errors in a heart beat when I'm reading something back, but I totally suck at getting it right when I'm just typing off the cuff. I even make some words compound words when they shouldn't be, and vice versa. No rhyme or reason to it.

A nurse of 30 years actually just called me....she got severely reprimanded for point forming a patient's overview to a doctor. Stressed her right out, because she is not good with grammar.

The doctor wants full and proper sentences, not hyphenated stuff. (which she has been doing her entire career).

But doc's the boss right?...so it just shows you that it can matter in the end to some employers.

She took a 3 month stress leave - hahaha

She is lazy and doesn't want to use proper grammar, and as a result, was so stressed she has to take THREE MONTHS LEAVE?

Trust me, she's not a lazy woman...

It's something that she has struggled with her entire life...she's just not good at it, and can't seem to grasp it, she wishes she could and has tried on many occasions to take courses etc.

The reason she took leave is to basically say "bite me" to the same doctor that has been reading her hyphenated reports for the past 30 years, and said squat about them.

Stress leave is so easy to get in Canada....just go see your doc, he'll sign the paper, and you get 3 month paid vacation...and your employer has to take you back after.

She saw the opportunity and took it :)

Nothing says "bite me" like "Yo patient be all toe up from da flow up you dig. His face be lookin' like your bes writin' on a p-script for a brain trip. Bes check it sucka fo he up n make like flo jo runnin' a foe foe to da swirly pearly. 'Eh."

I'm certain that would go over well.

I just emailed her that sentence - she is gonna get such a laugh from that.....

....as she sits on her deck in the sun, sippin' her pina colada.
