I love Jaco...and I love Jazz..period. That's really my interest...just Jazz. I don't have a bass yet, just stratocasters and a classical but I've always been interested in bass too...the bass guitar anyway. I was thinking of getting the Squier fretless vintage modified bass, then the standard bass and now I'm just up in the air wondering if I should get a custom guitar to keep the weight down.
If you go fretless be sure it has lines. I do not recommend you learn how to play bass on a no line fretless. An acoustic bass will not have the volume necessary to gig with.
Practice amp with 15 watts is OK. Gigging amp will need at least 150 watts - 200 even better.
I'd suggest one of the started kits for now, it will play better than you can for at least three years. By then you will be ready to up-grade and know what you want.
