Just ordered a Carvin SB5000

I finally broke down and ordered an SB5000. Classic white, tortoise pickguard, rosewood fingerboard, abalone dots and the bridge humbucker with stacked mid sweep controls (I've always liked basses with that setup -- Musicman, Lakland, etc. -- and never really liked jazz bridge pickups). Should look similar to the white SB4000 on [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], except with a white headstock and the bridge humbucker.

Anyway, now the waiting begins. :)

Cheers,
Liam

Hmmm - that would make it less painful to pay for - put down your 20% and then tuck away the rest over that time...

hmmm.... I'm finding it hard to resist...

They are really great basses and since you're in San Diego you could go down to the factory showroom and play some and then order your perfect combination.
Resistance is futile <said in Borg voice> ;)

I ordered mine on the 18th, but my postcard says the 20th on it. I have an expected completion date of March 2nd. I'm hoping that they are pretty close to finishing on the date, Ive got a gig on March 13th that I really want to use it for.

Nice! You'll have to give us a nice review once it arrives.

I've been trying to fight the urge to get one of these since they were first released. After talking with my wife I think I have decided to wait and have this be my Christmas present. It's going to be a long 11 months, and a good test of GAS. Hopefully Carvin will still be running the same discounts then.

Did that a couple of weeks ago - even posted a lengthy review here on TB...

Long and short: I was very impressed with the 5000, not so much with the 4000 (the neck profile was less to my tastes) and very unimpressed with their other bass offerings. Funny thing - I told one of the guys working in the showroom how impressed I was with the 5000 and he kind of rolled his eyes and said "yeah... whoda thought a simple, bolt on bass..." I was amused....

Was it just the "feel" of the 5000 that you preferred over the 4000, or was the overall tone different too? I prefer a P neck over the standard J neck so I don't think there would be an issue for me. I would rarely use the low B so I'm still leaning toward the 4000.

Keep in mind these were 2 different basses, with what may have been different p'ups (the tags at the store are cryptic at best) and different age of strings. I am very confident that if all the parts were equal, the tone would have been the same.

No, it was the feel. The 4 string neck felt chunkier than the 5 - - it may have not be set up as well. I can say this: My 4 I have a home (a Lakland 4-94 I bought used for $900) played much better.

However, the 5000 played as good as any 5 string bolt-on I've ever messed with. To me, how an axe plays is *key* - - "tone" can be tweaked with strings/p'ups/preamp and even your amp / pedals... But nothing can fix a bad playing bass.
