Just Ordered My Rondo

@Warpticon: I think a replacement neck would be hard to do on a Rondo, considering that the neck pocket specs don't conform to Fender specs, so that makes adding an Allparts/Warmoth et al. neck difficult. Reprofiling the neck would be prohibitively expensive. I think I'm better off returning the bass and putting the $100.00 toward a Fender Jazz Bass is the right move for me.

All I know is that plenty of people have done it, and it wasn't that complicated, but it's your money/time/etc.

If there is in fact a difference in thickness between the 57 and 62 models, i wonder where the 75 model necks fall? I haven't heard anything about them really... i can almost imagine a skinny Geddy like neck, but i suspect i would have heard something about that if it were true.

That's a bummer....

The JB 5er I actually find is thinner than my G&L L-1505 with about the same spacing.

I'm actually still really pleased with my bass as I've been playing the thing constantly.

I'm having a very hard time justifying the big bucks for "player" basses after this one.

I ordered a SX Friday and will get it Monday, it is only a 2 hour drive from my house in NH, but UPS is easier. I got the 5 string 57 J, mainly to have a back up that I wouldn't mind if a cue ball bounces off of, instead of my 2004 LTD Warwick. I haven't gotten it yet, but for me, if for nothing else it is the spare tire I never use in my car, it was worth the price to know it's there. I'll share my thoughts Monday when I have it.

I have both a 62 and a 75 and the necks don't feel any different thickness wise at all. They feel different to play on being different woods but not as far as depth. I'll have to measure them the next time I have the strings off.

Skinny like a geddy? That'd be a big nope ! lol. both of them are deeper than my 08 MIM deluxe jazz. Not in a bad way tho. I don't have long fingers at all and they are both really comfortable to play.

If you don't like it send it back to Kurt, Rondo has a great return policy. I don't like the over tinted necks myself, the '75 J they have has a nice clear finish Link Removed The necks are a little beefy but I like them, remind me of a 70's Jazz with a little more meat. Here is mine down in the shop. I bought it just to have something leaning in the corner when I need to grab a bass. For 120-150 you can get a very use-able bass. The do have their short comings but they play and sound good for the $ I have over 30 basses mostly vintage US and I love My SX.

just got my LPB jazz 5er yesterday its actually pretty good for the money. i had kind of a lemon in my previous rondo bass but they are beyond accomodating when it comes to returns and exchanging. my sjb-62mg lpb (phew..) is in the way to arrive monday matching headstock and all. heres hoping for the best on that one too. considering i'm arookie I don't have much to compare it to. I tried a yamaha rbx4 a2 and while I iked the tone, the neck was not the right feel for my hands and made me cramp up. I had a fretless 3ts PJ from rondo and it was great feeling to the hands but it had isues and went back. :( I was gonna reorder that same one till I saw the matching headstock LPB in stock. hope its just as comfy to my hands.

EDIT: YES!!! the strings are deader than disco but I look at it this way. no one keeps the stock rustwounds anyhow but you need SOMETHING so you can play out of the box. :D

The Neutral
The neck feels very, very thick to me, very baseball battish, perhaps a D-shape. Reminds me of certain 70s Fender P-Basses I've tried. I really prefer a thinner neck profile.

This is the area where I think SX can improve which came to light for me just recently. A friend happened to drop off his latest acquisition, a 1992 Fender Precision Plus bass (known as "The Boner") for a set up. Generally speaking, I happen to prefer the tonal qualities and neck profile of jazz basses versus P basses, and my present "go to" bass is a 5 string Douglas. But the profile of this P bass neck felt better in my hands as compared to my SX SJB-75 which I've owned for a couple of years. So I decided to take some rough measurements to see how much an incremental measurement can relate to feel. Here's what I got:

1) Fender P Bass:
Width at the nut - 1 5/8"
Thickness of the neck at the first fret - 12/16"

2) SX SJB-75:
Width at the nut - 1 1/2"
Thickness of the neck at the first fret - 14/16"

3) Douglas 825:
Width at the nut - 1 3/4"
Thickness of the neck at the first fret - 13/16"

The width of the necks are relatively in line with what one would expect from these types of basses. However, the SJB neck is the thickest of the bunch and even though it's a small amount by the numbers, it translates into that "baseball bat like" feel. Almost as if it's out of proportion (for a jazz bass).

I still enjoy playing my SX and I've gigged with it allot. I guess I'm used to it.

Having started playing bass back in the mid-80s as a teenager, it's a strange feeling playing a Rondo and longing for a "real" Squier instead, but that's where I find myself at the moment. $500+ for a Standard Fender MIM seems outlandish to me, considering that I would almost have to replace the bridge. The Rondo is not really acceptable for my taste.

Perhaps the Classic Vibe Squier is just what the doctor ordered for me. That HiMass bridge sounds good to me and feels so delightfully solid, very much like a Gotoh 201. And I'm positively in love with the Sonic Blue finish on the P version. I think that's my next bass.

If Squier or Fender made a Surf Green bass with a maple fingerboard, it would be the perfect companion for me, especially if it had (faux) mother-of-pearl binding and block inlays!

I like the new CV Squier 50's P-bass a lot, but not the jazz. The SX jazz pickups are hotter and I like their tone better personally.

You may be disappointed then. The SX Jazz necks, while a bit thicker than a Fender Jazz neck all around, is nowhere near a P-bass "baseball bat" sized neck.

The SX P bass necks are nice and thick. I don't really like the P neck, but the SX neck that was on my P was so comfortable I almost left it on the bass!

BTW, Rondo has some great replacement SX P necks for under 50 bucks.....
