Just ordered some Chromes

Today I ordered some Medium Gauge D'Addario Chromes to put on my fake-Fender J-bass at my local guitar/bass retailer. I ordered them just to hear how they sound on a J. It will decide if my next (good Fender) bass will be a J or a P. So let's wait, shall we?:D

Anyone who has experience with them so far on J's/P's?
:bassist:

Yeah, they have strong mids. My favorite current flats. When they go dead, they really shine. I recently compared a set of dead Chromes to an old worn set of Fender flats that I have, and for all intents and purposes they sound so close I doubt I could tell the difference in a blind test.

I've had them on my fretless J and my fretted P bass. I had them on my P Bass first, and liked them, but was still interested in other flats, so I ordered GHS Precision Flats, and they sounded much better on the P to me. Then I got my fretless J and put GHS black nylon tapewounds on it, but took them off because they were too dead sounding, and swapped them out for the Chromes and the Chromes made it sound so much better... Being that they're arguably the brightest flatwound you can get, they worked well on the fretless to give some extra clarity, but they were a little too bright for the P... I wanted some more thump on her.

Sorry, but I so don't get that reputation that Chromes have for being bright. So far I've tried Rotos, TI's, old Fenders, LaBellas, GHS's, and Chromes, and Chromes and old Fenders have been the darkest by far. So unless I really am living in Bizarro World like people have told me all my life, I'm not getting it.

I had a hell of a time with Chromes on my P. We really needed to dial out the upper mids to pull out the GANK. Here's a take with a lot of EQing. You can still hear the issue on the slides:

I swapped them out for Laballa FMs and it was a lot more earthy. Was it just the bass/pickups etc..?? Maybe.

Live-to-air recording (warts n all) - this time I slapped the LaBellas on my 70's RI J (different beast I know):

I heard your comparo clips Jimmy and was really pretty surprised. Sounded nothing like mine. Maybe its me who lives in Bizarro World.

I find the Chromes on my 4003 brighter than any other flats I've come across but that's probably just because they are the newest. They're almost five months old at this point.

The LaBella's on my 4001 sound much more mellow under normal playing conditions but actually seem to get brighter than the Chromes when really dug into.

It's all probably just my imagination. It's weird. My left hand loves the lighter gauge Chromes but my right hand loves the Labellas. They're always fighting for my attention.

I don't know...those sounds are pretty consistent what I hear out of Chromes vs Labellas. Labellas definitely don't have those upper mids so prominent like the Chromes, and I guess that bright top end I heard didn't get so prominently featured in your mixes. Maybe that's what people mean when they call the Chromes "bright." I like it, though. Killer band, BTW!

I recently changed the Chromes on my 4003 to TI flats. The Chromes sounded good on all but the G string, which never seemed to warm up like I wanted. The TIs so are just what I was looking for in a fatter warmer G but still have enough percussion for me. But in general I really like Chromes too.
