Well guys ... welcome to the club ... we've been paying considerably more than that for years. You are all just too spoiled

In fact most of the world pays closer to the full (read: unsubsidized) cost of petrol that the US.

If the US were to properly price its petrol to include the cost of road and infrastructure building (which of course wouldn't be needed if there weren't cars) it would now be around $10 a gallon .

$3.85 is a bargain

Yeah, it's too bad that only America can use the power of magic to build roads and infrastructure for free, allowing us to sell cheap gas

The prices here were up to 1.42 € not too long ago, that's 5.35 € per gallon, or 6.55 $

I filled up a few days ago at $1.34 per litre. That's $5.72 per galon in Aussie $. Apply todays exchange rate and that's about US$3.89 per gallon.

Here in hawaii, last time i filled up it was like $4.05/gal. I think some of the more populated islands are significantly less.. Maui is $3.95/gal last i heard. Its amazing how many miles you can put on a car while on an island. but o well, no complaints.

I don't want to be too nosy, but how are you European folks able to afford gas that is $6 and more a gallon? What kind of hourly wages do you make??? For someone in the USA who makes $20 an hour, $3 a gallon here in the USA is spendy.

I can speak for Hong Kong ... we drive small cars (and tax the devil out of SUVs) and build our cities up (not out) so we can walk everywhere; and we run a fast and packed Metro train (we even have 'pushers' to crowd the people in during rush hour). Each Metro station has 40 story high-rises built on top of them housing perhaps 100,000 for the station community, with the bottom three levels dedicated to shopping malls. Lifts take people down from their apartments to the metro trains.

I spent the summer in Los Angeles area ... talk about a sunbelt travesty. Everyone wants to own their own plot of land out of sight of the neighbors -- so the city can't maintain enough population density to make mass transit worthwhile. Then they want to travel around in a giant Peterbilt SUV, because it's trendy; and will drive even when they could walk or bicycle. And all shopping is confined to huge MegaMalls and outlet centers miles away from any civilized dwellings, with airconditioning and huge parking lots... etc. etc.

Oh ... and these same Californians are whining about $3/gallon being a high cost for petrol (a price that is that high because most of the Iraqi production has gone off-line)

Sorry, but no sympathy here, and I'm American ... I'd hate to hear how our Eurpean brethren feel.
