I have had a Fender Roscoe Beck IV on layaway, and I just picked it up today! Brand Spanking New, I'm psyched. The plastic stuff on the pickguard was really hard to remove, I had to use some solvent (after testing it!) to get the adhesive off. I cleaned up the ends of the frets a little and polished them, and smoothed down and oiled the fingerboard, and gave it a meticulous set-up.
The intonation is really, really good, the best of any of my basses. It is very solid and plays really nice and easy (I lowered the nut slots a little). The action can be put quite low, the E string was playable at 3/32 off the last fret! I had to raise it to 4/32 to make the Hipshot thing usable at D, though.
I like it a lot more than other Fenders I have tried, though you should be warned that this is not a bright-sounding bass. It is sort of dark and woody sounding on most of the settings, and I think it will sound really good in my band. My homemade Carvin has a lot more high-frequency and overtones, but not the lower mid and clear bass resonance of this bass.
So far I am really happy with it, and can't wait for rehearsal on Tuesday. It is also a really pretty bass, with a sunburst fininsh and rosewood board. It balances while sitting better than P's and J's.
