Just played my first SX (essex)

So i recommended SX basses to a new student because of all of your reviews. I was expecting a very mediocre bass that would have to be adjusted, strings changed, finish problems, etc that was playable. What we got was and unbelievable LPB jazz with a flawless finish, perfect intonation, light gauge light strings, a wonderful vintage tint to the neck, and excellent string height and playability. The student is a 12 year old girl and picked LPB because she liked the color. I was almost speechless when I was inspecting it, I kid you not. It is far superior to any other budget bass that I have played and sounded shockingly good, I would probably take it over some basses that are twice and sometimes three times the price. Thanks to everyone that put in their two cents, and thanks to Rondo for delivering a great product at a better price. The girl and her mother left very, very happy, and I left with terrible GAS pains.

So since I joined this site a few months ago, I've been reading the threads and reading reviews on the SX guitars and basses.

SO you're all to blame, as I am fixing to have to buy me an SX bass. The decisions are legion, however. Should I get a jazz or a p? Fretted or fretless? But wait, that short scale jazz LPB looks so good, and I do love a good shortscale. And I really have been playing my fretless alot lately...maybe I need a p fretless? See what I mean, voices in my head! Telling me to buy an SX!

just wait till you buy one, and then love it so much u cant resist but gas over a 2nd and or third one I'm fighting that voice off right now but at 100-150 a pop i dunno........................

I just got this bass - Link Removed - So far I am amazed at the quality and sound of this bass. The only problem is I keep getting a buzz when I play and open A. When I press down on the nut on top of the A string, the buzzing goes away. Should I try to sand the nut down?

Um, no!

I have a buzzy nut on one of my SX Jazz basses....I guess it is a semi common problem with the Fender type headstock. The problem may also be the notch for the A string is too big.

One could get a new nut, or a larger diameter set of strings, or a 3 string retainer (Hipshot..etc) or another button string hold down. I have also read someone here used a piece of white cardstock, a small piece between the string and the nut, I think someone else also used coton cloth...

The buzzing I heard was not audible through the amp. I fully intend to swap the nut out at some point for a Tusq or Graph Tech...maybe even brass, but I'd have to find one for a 12 inch radius fretboard. The Fender stuff has too tight a radius, though it would work.

You could also restring the bass but leave the A string about one or two wraps longer to create more downward pressure. That is how I solved the issue on my bass. I was only leaving 3 wraps around the post, I leave almost 5 now and no buzz....just start from the top down and don't overlap.....
