Just Walked Out of Practice

tell the guys you are going to advertise for another lead singer as a "fill in"...someone who wants experiance while your other singer is away....then tell the lead singer not to come in until half way through rehearsal as per usual to give the other guy a go...lol

Honest and reliable people function best when in the company of honest and reliable people. If I need to lie to get a guy to show up to a paying gig on time, I'd prefer to re-invest that energy into replacing him with someone who wants it more.

I did it to a friend of mine to make a point. It didn't fix anything. The project fell apart. Still was happy to get the 'prank' off. We still laugh about it to this day.

But you're right in a more professional situation it would be inappropriate.

I don't play to make points or change people - I play for money and fun, in that order.

Toolbags like your singer risk compromising those objectives and ruining it for the more hardworking and reliable members. Consequently such personalities (tbags) have a very finite life in the groups I've had a hand in running.

If you're not willing to leave the band yet, it's high time one or more of the other band members tried to sing some lead vocals. Not only would you be better prepared the next time he shows up late for a gig, it just might serve notice that he's not irreplacable.

I like the idea of scheduling an audition for next practice and hope he walks in on it...

"We didn't think you'd mind, didn't have anything else to do while we were waiting for you. Figured the guy could do the first set on gigs too, since we need a sub for you anyway since you never show up for the first set"

Randy

Passive aggression = not a good way to treat anyone

But that would be funny...

There are lots of people who want to play music (or sing). There are lots of singers, and some of them look at it the way your guy does - I sing, I don't need to be there for setup (or the beginning of rehearsal, or..., or...etc.)

In lots of gigs (wanna work at a studio?) they give you a first position, which has no critical stuff to do. They want to make sure you'll show up before they give you any responsibility. This guy isn't even showing up. Being the singer for a band is a position of responsibility, as you can't gig without him. He hasn't earned that.

NEXT!

No matter how well you know him. Even if you've been best friends since childhood. You won't change his habits like that. You should remove him. If the other band members aren't cool with that, remove yourself.

Singer in my last band was horrible at time management. 1-2hrs late to practice was the norm. Sometimes when he got there he'd spend another hour on his phone. Not merely texting but actually on a phone call pacing around the lot while we all were jamming.

I've known him for years outside of band related stuff. He's perpetually late to anything he does, ever. I've pulled the scheduling trick on him a few times saying to be there earlier than when we mean it. Funny thing is one time he actually did show up at the super early time. Called us up and complained that we made him wait on us.

Surprisingly he was on time to the gigs we had.

A post early on summed it up: He's getting away with it because people let him. You could have told him or the other members "One more time and I'm through". But it doesn't matter. You made your point and you did nothing wrong.
