Just Walked Out of Practice

I joined a cover band about 2 months ago. Our singer has not ever been on time to practice or a gig. Not even once. And when I say late.. I mean like hours late not 5 or 10 minutes. We even started one gig late because he said he had a flat tire, which we later found out he had lied about.

We've talked to him, but to no avail. The drummer and one of the guitar players have been playing with him for years and just shake their heads and put up with it.

Tonight we waited for him for an hour and a half and I finally just got fed up and left. I apologized to everyone else, but I just couldn't sit there and let my life slip away waiting on this guy. I don't really have a question..... I don't think there's any hope of him changing.... I guess I just wanted to rant. :scowl:

Wow. He sounds like a right dick.

I think I might have waited for him once... maybe twice... no more than 30 to 45 minutes, and that would have been it for me.

By the way, who is this guy, Sammy Hagar? Diamond Dave? He must be really good for you guys to wait on him like that!

I hope his ability matches his ego!

Best thing you could have done is leave. I'd have done the same, at around half an hour.

The singers behaviour will continue while the other members accept things as just the way they are. Why should he change? If he's an hour and a half late, this group will still be there waiting. Probably making excuses to the venue on his behalf as well...

Well thanks for the encouragement. I was worried that maybe I had overreacted.

I'm not ready to give up on the group just yet. There is definitely some potential there. If this doesn't get the message across to the singer then I will start lobbying to replace him. If that doesn't work then I guess it's back to the CL for me.

You could tell him the gig is an hour or two earlier so when he shows up an hour or two late he'll actually be on time

I've done that with someone before. He came in only 5 minutes late that way and was all "why aren't you guys set up yet?". I just said "I don't know" as I was putting a mixer in his hands.

He figured out what I did. Still made me feel good.

Honest and reliable people function best when in the company of honest and reliable people. If I need to lie to get a guy to show up to a paying gig on time, I'd prefer to re-invest that energy into replacing him with someone who wants it more.
