Don't forget that the likes of Goodwill are there to make money, not for profit's sake but that the money can then go into other benevolent ventures. Like feeding the poor, etc.

you'd get more money for selling a $3,900 instrument than you'd save in tax write-offs for donating it

I recently donated some musical equipment to a local non-profit. It was easier to take a small tax write-off than it was to sell. Especially in our time of 1099k's being issued for small amounts.
