Just why would someone drop this off to goodwill for free????

When a new piece of clothing doesn't suit me, I give it to Goodwill.
Owner passed and family doesn't know what they have, or they don't care, or they want to feel good by donating. If you want a definitive answer you have to ask the people that dropped it off.
You know you get tax write offs when you donate right?
I had no idea that Sadowsky had anything in his lineup that was not a Fender ripoff

When your new piece of clothing is a rare hand-made design from a renowned atelier, you can resell it to fashion collectors for most of what you paid for it.
If you watch that site regularly, you'll see even crazier stuff. Some people just don't care. Yet more maddeningly, until fairly recently, many Goodwills had policies to throw away instruments that came in missing an arbitrary number of strings, so who knows what got tossed before they started listing everything on the site.
"This was grandpa's, but it only played 'old-timey' stuff, and I can't plug it into my laptop, so it's probably broken anyway..."
Some reasons: pure charity, donation value greater than market value, defective, stolen, bad mojo, clutter fatigue, value unawareness, wrong color, origin bias, etc
Also, although Sadowsky labeled, it's an offshore contract build, and was long before his current offshore bass ventures. Pictured model, and other Sadowsky hollow body guitars are recently discontinued as Sadowsky instruments.

There was a '64 P Bass on there recently. At least Goodwill is making some decent money for their cause with some of these instruments.
I assume that these instruments get donated when a death happens and the family isn't equipped for determining the value of every possession or trinket in the house. I know that when it's time for me to clean out my parents' house, I'm not going to research much of anything. Donation, estate sale, or trash is where it will all go.

There are people out there for whom 4K is merely a rounding error on their annual snack budget. And FWIW, those people usually pay proportionately less in tax than we do.... paradoxically in part because of "charitable" donations.
Probably, more appropriately priced at Goodwill, than GC. 
While some families members will be shocking in there greed, to get whatever they can. Other survivors of the decreased just want to be done with it. It’s surprising that the instrument made it to the Good Will. Entire household’s have been dumped on sidewalks because relatives didn’t want to be bothered or didn’t have the time to examine what legacy was being thrown out, sad but true.
You know the value returned would bring a lot more than the tax write off value, right?
Write off = tax burden reduced by value of the donation X your effective tax rate
Private sale = 100% to the seller
Tax write off, clueless person, there is a reason once a month I see articles of "Man finds Canon lens for 5 bucks turns out to be 1 in million rare Japanese film lens that is worth 100k"
On a serious note that just seems to be a tax write off or family member. When people have no idea what they have, and honestly I will agree something that can be worth that much I do find odd, sometimes it is easier to sell directly to a place like GC (which these days is rarely taking trades in from what I heard) or just donate it easily. Someone could also be selling their old love ones house so the guitar isn't worthing wasting time for. Pure assuming though and speculation!!! Could be a million things!
Seriously, google someone finds rare thing at Thrift store it is a common thing but also Goodwill is pretty smart and knows what hey got!

On a serious note that just seems to be a tax write off or family member. When people have no idea what they have, and honestly I will agree something that can be worth that much I do find odd, sometimes it is easier to sell directly to a place like GC (which these days is rarely taking trades in from what I heard) or just donate it easily.
