This may be heretical, but I've never been impressed with his sound and think it's a great waste of a Wal. They can sound so much richer than that, not to mention be used for more interesting playing than such repetitive finger-exercise parts.

MAybe Im being too serious but yeah, I think you are being a little unfair. Him using a Wal helps get a really unique sound. Even aside from the pedals and him himself. I know you said disregard, Im just bringing another POV to the table. I know Wals can be used in many different genres, but I think that if JC did use a P or a J say, he wouldnt have the sound he has with a Wal. Not totally anyway. IMO. It doesnt really matter what I think in this regard anyway, someone will shoot it down Im sure.

I dont know about that, people have been using Wals for a long time. I want one because Geddys Wal tone in the 80s is the bass tone I hear in my head. To be honest, I love Tool and I like JCs tone, but I much prefer others Wal tones.

I am a die hard Justin Chancellor fan and in my opinion his tone is top notch but these are some other notable artists for bringing out that sound. Geddy Lee (as mentioned, Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, Failure (90's stuff only), Paul McCartney has used them live, Flea used one to record BSSM but found them to be "too ugly to play live", Don't quote me on this but I believe I saw a picture of Roger Waters with one a couple years ago. I love the sound of Wal basses there's nothing quite like them. Only way to replicate it is with a multi-coil pickup and a low pass filter preamp.

The Wal is the majority of his tone. I used to not believe it but then I saw this video and you could totally tell.


I used to be a TOOL worshiper, but then I took an arrow to the knee and got burnt out on TOOL after seeing them 4 times in 1 year. Each show was the same.
As for the photograph, its worth a thousand words. Maybe it was him. Maybe he was recording something. Maybe someone in the band just said "Hey, play this for a second and see how you like the action on it". I also believe that Justine Chancellor is the marketing behind Wal basses and their prices. Of course he's not the only Wal user, but I hadn't even heard of Wal until I started looking into his tone.
