Best thing is, it could serve double duty as a Phil Lynott sig.
Best thing is I could probably afford it instead of a Wal
for everyone who doesn't know, this pic is a few years old when he recorded some bass parts for the last isis album. He is friends with those guys. Everyone can calm down now
I'd get a big laugh if he revealed that his super secret tone all these years was just a P bass, the Wal's are just live basses.
I love his tone with tool but he uses a lot of pedals and effects from what I hear. I'm sure his tone could be had from other brands of basses (not spot on because you would need his
hands and feel ). I wouldn't turn down a deal on a Wal but not too sound like him.

Having 4 Wals and played in. Tool Tribute, I would say the Wal is about 85% of that "chirpy grind" and overall tone that you hear on recordings where you don't have an obvious takeover from a pedal that changes things
Ie: Whammy/Tremolo/high gain distortion etc etc

That is not just any P bass. The wood is from a tree grown in magical soil where the last unicorn on earth died and decomposed and the hardware was forged from metal recovered from the wreckage at Area 51.
If I hired him for a studio date and he didn't bring his Wal, I would fire him. That's like hiring Paul McCartney to play guitar...nice, but not what I hired you for. Now stop effin around and go out to the car and get your Wal...we didn't ask for your rendition of My Girl!!!

Gads, I hope so, it might bring down the price of used Wals just a bit.
This may be heretical, but I've never been impressed with his sound and think it's a great waste of a Wal. They can sound so much richer than that, not to mention be used for more interesting playing than such repetitive finger-exercise parts.
I don't mean to annoy his fans and maybe I'm not being fair, but I had to get that off my chest. Please disregard if you disagree.
